Inventec has just released images of two new UMPC units that it has set for the production line. The UMPC 7-A and the UMPC 5-D walked home with iF Design Awards honors, and from the images it is clear why. The curved construction of the UMPC 7-A is not done for looks alone; apparently, it will improve the viewing angle and give the keyboard a more ergonomic build than is usually permitted with a flat design. Jump for a shot of the more orthodox UMPC 5-D.
The guys at Unwired View have taken a stab at what the likely specification will be, and they are going with an Intel Menlow platform, 1.33 with 45-nm 800 MHz-1.33 GHz Silverthone CPU, Poulsbo US15 chipset, 1-2 GB of RAM and 30-60 GB HDD. We should not think they are too far off the mark. Either way, with Inventec being a member of Intel's Mobile Internet Device Innovation Alliance, you can bet these UMPCs will be taking form soon enough, so guesswork won't be needed for long. Looks very attractive from a design perspective, but what we REALLY want to know, is if it will fit into a manilla envelope....
Nice!
Nice. Hopefully this will make Apple create something practical for Macworld '09, namely a Macbook Touch, and it must have an optical drive. None of the Macbook Touch meets the Air crap.
@CGrant: actually if they did release a macbook touch i wouldnt mind it not having an optical drive because I will most likely not need that drive.
Except they should make the optical drive wireless. That would make it MUCH more useful.
But I think I would prefer something like this. It will probably be a hell of a lot cheaper.
That docking setup is, for a lack of a better word, sick-tight. I would love if the Macbook touch/new newton took on a modular docking system like that. If there was a laptop like dock setup (like in the second picture) I could see them putting an optical drive and more ports on that and have the Macbook touch/new newton similar to the MBA. And It would have to fit into a manila envelope.
@MadColombian: you know the Air lets you use another mac's optical drive over 802.11, right? And I would bet most people buying this already have another mac. But still, a standalone wireless solution would be nice as well, or maybe some Windows/Linux drivers for those who don't have a mac desktop or laptop capable of running 10.5... I'm not holding my breath for that though.
Cute! Very cute!!
@mac4drew: yeah i meant a standalone
however i think i like the idea of the dock with the optical drive and more ports in there even better!!!
Heck yeah. This looks nice. If they made it tablet-y, it'd be even better. I like the docking going on.
Sexy, but Vista?
@binaryspiral:
Vista is a great OS, but running on a single core at 1.3 Ghz... not a chance, unless is the very basic one.
That is a beautiful machine. It deserves design awards. This is truly visionary, much like the OLPC-XO that I'm writing this post on. The only downside I see to the Inventec machines is that they run Vista. It's a flawed system like all Windows systems. If I want a rock-solid OS I'll stick to OSX or Linux. The only thing Windows install discs are good for is coasters.
LOL, if apple had introduced something like THIS at macworld, I'd be sold.
This is shit. What?.. are you supposed to rock this back and forth on your lap? What the fuck. I can rock this on my dick.
@gary_slamson.: I rock your mother on my dick.
@gary_slamson.: what the hell is up with the dick-fascination?
Now this is different. Kind of interesting if you ask me.
Nice post Haroon!
Finally! A UMPC I'd actually buy!
....yanno...if it didn't cost the same as a notebook...
@gary_slamson.: I rock your mother on my dick. While your daddy, I rock my anus on his mouth.
that slide-up one looks good, if it's similar in size to an OQO and costs less, it would be great.
Has anyone ever actually bought a UMPC and used it for anything besides porn in the bathroom at work?
i still prefer the sony VAIO® UX Series. Not as pretty but has 3G and can be used as a cell phone with some modding. Not that I don't appreciate the design but probably wont have the hard keyboard, tactile feedback is a nice thing to have. I thib=nk sony should redesign the UX and you'd have the perfect UMPC.
"Has anyone ever actually bought a UMPC and used it for anything besides porn in the bathroom at work?"
hell yeah I do- I got a wibrain b1h and I am in love with it- the via graphics chipset so far even handles maya and cinema 4d without a problem, but mainly I am using it for portable music production (when I am on the train to work and at lunch)as it does well with both fl studio and ableton and surfing the internet when I am in bed and don't feel like sitting in front of the computer
if it costs less then oqo, then I`m game
