The upcoming movie "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep" has prompted one hell of a publicity stunt in Tokyo Bay. The extremely cool effect illustrated above is achieved using a large water screen and some very well timed water fountains. In order to get the full effect, check out the video after the break. Seriously, I can't understand a thing that is being said, but I want to see this movie. Marketing magic!

you have to be shitting me. only fountains?! wow. BIG IN JAPAN!!
the next HDTV.... just watch
So I am guessing they are spraying water up and using a projector to bounce the light off of it in strategic locations?
Looks pretty slick.
yea...my bathtub can do that so its all good
Holy shitballs.
There you go Japan always stepping it up!
ill probably have problems doing this w/ our sprinklers
Digg it. I did. :P
wow that is... one of the coolest things ever.
The narrator explains that it is just a flat water spray screen which the projector is aimed at. I think it only looks 3d from the frontal angle. Ironic that it says "Copyrighted material. Please refrain from posting this video on the internet." during the long cut of message on the screen.
think how bad you could scare anyone from before 1800 (pick a time period) with that
I could be wrong, but isn't this the same concept that Disney uses for shows in their theme parks? I don't think it's a new idea, but I certainly appreciate the use of it in public for marketing.
COO>L
I take it none of you have been to Disneyland.
As far as I know, Disney pioneered this years ago with their "Fantasmic" show at Disneyland, with video clips from Disney films projected on huge fans of water.
WOW! just WOW!
that is awesome... I don't even want to know how long that took to design.
Now, where's my papier mache Cloverfield monster to terrorize people in SoHo?
I saw one of these in Darling harbor in Sydney,AUS almost 10 years ago. Not much for fancy graphics, but it was similar technology.
Meh, that's nothing! I can do so much better with my piss-stream and a laser-pointer! The clean-up job is a bitch tho...
And if you're not cool enough to live on the west coast and make it to Disneyland, they also run Fantasmic in all its watery-spray-y goodness at MGM in Orlando-- Though its not quite as cool as the one at Disneyland.
I don't know why but I'm totally getting a "Blade Runner" vibe from this! Too cool!
LOL @ the scream...
your life was ended by mermaids
Insignificant, bitchy detail: Waterhorse has been in the theaters for well over a month. I took my 4 year-old to see it around Christmas (LA). BTW, probably age-inappropriate for newly 4 year-olds...some parts scared my daughter silly and she spent at least 30 minutes of the movie with her back to the screen.
This is actually performed by Disney in the MGM studio in Orlando, the Fantasmic show.
Very very cool, for those of you wanting to see this should definitely visit Disney.
In Japanese it just basically translates "Nessie Shows up in Tokyo Harbor" and it explains how the projection was done on water and that the monster is 15 meters in scale (the image). It also explains that the director and producers do not want to show all of the monstor over the internet.
dou itashi mashite! (you're welcome!)
True Disney did it first, but this application kicks the ass of anything they have at Disneyland right now (the newer laser projection on mist effect is marginally well used on the Pirates of the Carribean and Indiana Jones rides right now, whereas the Haunted House still uses the cheesy 60s era projection effects on mirrors/glass).
Has anyone seen anything better at Disneyworld?
I have not seen the Fantasmic, so will do so on my next visit.
Go and see SONG OF THE SEA in Sentosa, Singapore =)
I would just shit my pants if I saw that, lol.
No actually this would make a killer cloverfield-esque marketing tool.
This is pretty cool. First time i've seen this was back in 1998 in The Hague, Holland. It's not 3d, but they used multiple projections for the characterers in the movie they showed. Coupled with the surround audio, it was an amazing experience altogether. This was the location they used: [www.flickr.com]
Now that is what I call a publicity stunt. Just don't try it in Boston harbor.
Hope poor old Nessie can speak Japanese. He's just a poor old lost Scottish monster, when all's said and done.
I bet that scared the hell out of some salarymen when they were on their bike-commute home! GOJIRA!! GOJIRA!!!!
please please please install in Loch Ness!
Didn't Disneyland have a Fantasia water show similar to this a few years ago? Very cool effect, would be neat for ome sort of log flume ride. :D
^ Yep, they still have it at MGM Studio in Orlando, FL. It's called Fantasmic.
