Cobalt Blue DS Arriving Next Month, Still Smoking Hot

Our favorite Japanese pseudo-citizen at Kotaku turns up some insider verbiage on that hot hot black-and-blue sex machine of a DS Lite that Circuit City pre-emptively had up for pre-order. The warehouse just started slapping the clamshells together, which in person, says the source, looks more "purplish blue" and "awesome."

It is, in fact, the same unit as the red-and-black DS Lite. Given that it takes something like two to four weeks after packing to hit shelves, Bashcraft suggests mid-to-late Feb. for D-Day. I so wish I didn't already have a black one, which is already a slab of aesthetic satisfaction. [Kotaku]

  • All right, here's my dilemma. My aging DS, while still functional, nowhere nearly approaches the hotness that is the DS Lite. Brighter screens, sharper picture, and a more pocket-friendly outline (what the hell is that in your pocket???) have had me sold on the device for some time now. I'd steal my wife's, but it's pink.

    BUT!

I know the second I plonk down the duckets for a DS Lite, Nintendo will release to the world their plans for the "DS 2" or the "DS Lite 2" or "DS 2 Turbo Hyper Fighting Alpha Beta 3: The New Challengers Return Again vs Capcom vs Marvel Plus EX Tournament Edition." Whatever they call it, rest assured it will be announced if I buy this thing, but not a moment sooner.

Do I take the hit and buy this to move the DS line forward for the benefit of all gamerkind? Or do I wait for some similarly fortuned individual to take the plunge in my place? Oh, Nintendo, why must you torment me so!

  • Now they need a green one so people can start trading their pokemon, 'cause obviously you only get specific ones per DS.

  • I mean not offense, but I am truly curious why it is that specification are meaningless in the Nintendo-fan mindset. Enthusiasm comes, not from better graphics or faster chipsets, but from changing the color of the device? Ooh's and aah's because it is a pretty color of blue, and strong consideration of getting rid of a current Nintendo gadget to get the same gadget in a new color?

    I don't get it. Maybe if I could afford to buy one, I would, but -- I can't, so I don't.

  • @novacthall: I believe you mean "ducats." Just sayin is all...
    @P3nnst8r: Yup.
@Monty: Its because we're all apes, and apes like colorful things. Plain and simple.

It is a nice color of blue, but I'm just not down with it any longer.

  • @novacthall: Ok, I didn't read your entire commment, but get a DS Lite!

  • Get a PSP you can do Skype!

  • They did the same thing with the old Game Boys. I see their game plan very cleary. WIth the old Gameboy 'Colors' people kept buying them, so they made more colors, and they sold like hot cakes. The whole time they had the 'Advanced' with the actual color screen ready to go in the background for a few years. As soon as sales dropped off on the 'Colors', they brought out the advanced, and the many incarnations it went through. I expect that we'll see more and more color selections until ultimatly the DS sales start to drop off. Than they'll pull out the DS2 they've had sitting in the shelf for the past 2-3 years. It's a winning game plan, sell, sell, sell, inovate, sell, sell sell...

  • They could have just stopped at pink. It's the hottest one anyway :)

  • @novacthall:
Life is too short to deny yourself anything. If it's sometihng you really want go for it.
My motto is if you can spoil yourself.

  • @novacthall: well dude think of it this way, you've dealt with your ds fat for this long,if you do go ahead and get the ds lite and a new model is announced you obviously have the stones to wait it out and buy the new one when you can afford it, or when they're about to release the ds 4. I'm gonna pre order this biotch as soon as some place pops up and allows me to do so

  • I would buy that one and give my white colored one to my GF to have. So that is a good reason for color.

  • You could make anything Cobalt Blue & Black and a certain percentage of the consumer population (including me) would buy it.

Cobalt Blue & Black Suicide Ray. Dangerous, but I'm sure I'd pretty much want that.

  • NOVACTHALL -- you'll probably get at least a good years worth of use out of it.

I imagine the DS 2 will feature it's own Virtual Console, enabling Nintendo to resell it's back catalog. Makes sense, right?

  • You know... I have the white one. I have been debating getting the Crimson and Black one, then giving my white one away to a brother or something. But now I'm torn because this Blue/Black one looks awesome... Sigh... decisions decisions...

  • @misstoiletweasel: I'm stuck with a pink one because that's all I could find, thanks to the shortage.

Everyone either says "it has character" or "oh god, it's so PINK." Or they say nothing at all because I am a big burly guy who looks like I will beat the crap out of them if they do.

I'd love to have the black and blue one, but I figure I'll get one of these replacement shells eventually.
