It's been a happy day in the way that I finally met Jesús and Addy (of Gizmodo) and there was none of that meeting you for the first time but not-on-the-internet weirdness you usually get. I landed in Madrid last night and Jesús had all his coolant drop out of his sports car like its water broke, so we ended up towing the thing and taking a cab out of there. The airport was the most beautiful I've ever seen up close, made of concrete, orange pillars, curvy wooden ceilings and lots of glass.
The food has been incredible, even if I don't know what we've been ordering. I love the style of the city, which has a lot of old world materials and signage, but plenty of modern designs too. Jesús and Addy live on the ground floor a few blocks from some big park, and although they're in the middle of what looks like a mixed work/live district, they somehow have a backyard.
Before tucking in for the night, I put my hand under a pillow and found a spare lego block. Regular readers of the site shouldn't be surprised. (Falcon bits.)
Today we went to their favorite tapas place for lunch, where you apparently stand up and eat and throw your trash on the floor. Just like home! On the way over, I noticed this TV tower that reminded me of Jesús's art style, a bit retro, colorful and lively.

Wow you never met them before? That's interesting yet surprisingly cool.
Sweet. By the by, what was that sports car?
Jesus and Addy live together?
Spain is a beautiful country!
You're lucky to have such hosts.
Enjoy.

@warkrismagic: Yeah, we share this flat. Sometimes we even share the bed, when we feel naughty. But just to watch movies together on one of the laptops.
@warkrismagic: Dude, don't you read this site?
Make sure that you try the "paella" dish in Spain. It's a piece of heaven on earth!
@Ben Zvan: Not everyone comes every day to read, although before I worked here I came here 12 times a day. (IT WAS PART OF MY JOB.)
This post makes me happy.
I come here like 50 times a day.
Sadly, it isn't part of my job.
Blam I spent a semester in Barcelona - if you think the TV/phone towers in Madrid are cool, just wait!
Have some ham and a Estrella Damm for me.
I'm lucky enough to visit spain every couple of years, it's a beautiful country.
Also - loving these 'Notes:' entries, it gives the blog a whole new personal touch to it.
Keep it up :)
I'm hoping we get a spy shot of the 'Falcon out of this visit to Spain.
i wonder how it feels like when finally meeting someone personally. after the long emails, calls, 3g conferences, realizing at last that you are actually talking to a real human being.
@Amiash: Funny thing is, even from the start of working with these two, it was very clear they had that vitality necessary to work at Giz. They're so lively and fun to be around, they fit right in at Giz and I got along with them right away.
@Brian Lam: Its not part of my job, and i am sure that I make it more than 12 times a day. I feel so ashamed.
At least I read fast, and use it as a diversion between phone calls, drafting memos, and doing research. I guy needs to let his brain unwind for a few minutes every hour, as far as I am concerned.
i have no idea if i would get in trouble for being on here as often as i am. giz and gmail, with a little fark when im feeling extra slack-offy....
NOTE: to whomever has to read my keystroke log:
I'm only on here when im waiting for things to render or a phone call, or on my breaks. I Promise. And I always make it up later.
@zenpoet:
thats how i feel about it. except i take breaks to smoke, too, but an old restaurant habit allows me to smoke a whole cig in under 2 minutes. and i read fast as well.
this is, however, my favorite, most visited website in my entire history of tubing.
@Brian Lam: Speaking as a reader, if you read enough of their collective work over time, you get the impression that Jesus and Addy are very cool, fun people to be around, and yes, even to work with.
Lego block under the pillow, that's very cool.
(Probably end up being that last piece of the 'Falcon, just watch!)
I could explain what most of the tapas are, including the first one in the menu on that bar (Anchoa en salazón con pipirrana) but then I would have to kill you.
Actually, they took you to a really good place that's close to where they live. You owe them.
And not only because of that, [www.gizmodo.es] editorial style is just as irreverent as the US version and manages to keep its wittiness and most of the blogger irony... all of which is very hard to translate into Spain's spanish. Kudos to them. (Jesús, eres un "mostro")
I want to go to Madrid and I don't want to pay for it. I'll gladly take a handout from Giz.
I want to go to Spain, beautiful people, beautiful culture, architecture, etc. It's like a latin country but in Europe, except if i would go there i wouldnt be able to understand a word of castellano. And i would sound rude if i spoke latinamerican spanish to anyone. Dude, Brian Lam go to La Alhambra, and take pictures, that place is amazing. Thats what i call a gentle mens club, those moors sure knew how to keep their woman happy.
@warkrismagic: Yeah, I've heard a rumor that they do.
Oh, and btw, Addy's a woman...
*ahem* Uh, Jesus, just where exactly are you hands in that picture? Addy looks a little...uh...happy?
Barcelona is a very, very cool city (especially in the summer) I went to a few tapas places and had no idea what I ordered or ate. I was thinking "that looks good; hmm... some kinda ham/cheese thing; WTF did I eat that for!?; All that for 30 euros!?"
Please do tell which tapas place that you went to.
@ninjamurf: That's Jesus spotting a new Lego set and Addy being nice but telling him through her teeth "forget it".
Damn! I thought they lived in England!? How do they like driving on the "correct" side of the road in Spain?
and what is brian lam doing in spain?
That's why I like the Giz so much: Mostly intelligent and cool people on all sides who really really like toys. And life. Sorry, I'm sick, that's as witty and profound as I'm going to be today (ie. Not much).
@Ben Zvan: Yeah, thats why I was surprised I didn't know.. I live and breathe gizmodo.
@ideaman2020: And yes I know Addy is a woman. =P
I love Madrid. Beautiful city, great food, wonderful people.
@Kaiser-Machead: Some two seater with a soft top and horizontally mounted engine.
@Brian Lam: well.. thats the problem.. I have a compulsory addiction to this site. =P I check it often enough that I'd say probably 1/4 of the time I load gizmodo up in my browser there hasn't been any new posts yet.. yeah.. its kinda sad :/
Ooohhhh... go to La Bardemcilla (as in Javier) and have some croquettes for me! Enjoy Madrid - it's a wonderful place.

@warkrismagic: There were a couple of posts that alluded to it, but I don't think it's been said out loud until this post and thread. I think I was just following Addy's posts more closely and sort of picked it up. I guess I just trust british chicks more.
@Brian Lam: Awesome job. Giz is almost always open in my browser. Technically, I get paid to do it, but it's not part of my job.
@My Boss: I kid. Ignore that.
