China Had Better Turn Off Its Firewall During the Olympics, Or Else

With the Olympics coming up, the pressure is mounting on China to turn off its countrywide firewall so journalists can cover the games uninhibited. While it's a part of the "host city contract" that Beijing agreed to when accepting its role as host of the games, whether or not China will actually follow through has come into doubt with recent censorship surrounding China's human rights abuses in Tibet. Oh, and, uh, Mr. T doesn't approve of censorship or human rights abuses. Fool. Am I doing this right? [Reuters]

First of all, I need about 8 more "jibba jabber"'s in there. Secondly, Mr. T is needed on the set of 37 PSA announcements, so let him go...

  • Gotta love socialism.

  • does Tor still work there?

  • Can China boycott (ban) Americans because of their human rights abuses?

  • Uncle! Enough with Mr T already...

  • Where's Mr. T speakin' some borderline-offensive Ebonics and referrin' to himself in the third person, fool? Didn't you get the memo? UHHHHHHHHH! UHHHHHHH! UHHHHHHH! You wanna jump, jump! Don't turn your back on me! Pain!

Hey T, isn't all this reporting wasting precious time that could be spent farming mats for your raid with your Nightelf Mohawk?

  • I think the correct title would be "I pitty the fool that doesn't turn off their firewall." or "I pitty the fool that censors teh interwebz."

  • If Mr. T bill you for using his image in many articles, hope you are well prepared my dear Mr. Giz :)))))))))))

  • We get it Giz: it's April Fools' day. A real April Fools' gag is a hoax that tricks people somehow. A continuous stream of 'pitty da fool' doesn't count.

  • @Geraldo: Seconded.

  • @elvisml2: It would be tough. It's not their call, but if they really wanted too, I'm sure they could.

China's certainly not doing anything in Tibet we haven't matched in Iraq.

  • My sister is there at the moment, and apparently all the westerners are being watched!!

  • Who ya callin a fool, FOOL!

The West would like nothing than see China disintegrate into a land of chaos like Afghanistan and Iraq. They would like nothing than to keep the yellow man down but I'm here to tell you that ain't gonna happen. The Chinese are too smart and too powerful for that. They've learned their lesson the hard way back in the 1800's.

  • would like nothing more that is...

  • what human rights abuses? when there is civil unrest and violence, any government will send troops to restore order.

@claystil: good point. we've done worse in iraq... like killing say... thousands of civilians... hmmm

  • Would like "nothing more" that is...

  • i like Mr T, but enough is enough already. I am gonna post some comments with icomment.com so I can put my opinion on any webpage, including this home page. check it out, your opinions all over the web...cool

  • @Noobs-R-Us: I don't understand how the West would want to see China disintegrate into chaos, please explain. Since China has the fastest growing economy and, heck, almost all "American" products are manufactured there I don't see how utter chaos and a loss of cheap goods would be what the evil white men of America want. It's just like the rest of the world doesn't want to see America's economy collapse because it would have bad effects on their economy, the same goes for China.

  • China seems to make promises sometimes without delivering. Sounds like my wife, for one! And she is better looking than Mr. T..............or Clubber Lang even

  • I hope that the press would have enough money to set up an open proxy somewhere outside... Last time I checked, that worked... :)

and, imo the whole "firewall of china" is a bad thing, not too much into censorship, but even less into "easily avoidable" censorship, like the ones at our schools... Can't believe that they PAY for that crap... :/ sadface

  • Mr. T. > China. With his Mohawk style and threatening demeanor, who would DARE be a fool around him?!

Love the Mr. T. headlines. Ignore dese hatin' Fools and keep it up, Giz!

  • I'd consider it a Birthday Suprise, cause no Foolin', I turn 25 today =)

  • Comment on China Had Better Turn Off Its Firewall During the Olympics, Or Else I live in China, and while being not a too strict restriction, this censorship is still a pain in the ass when you want to use flickr, or google image, or ... gizmodo (content is there, but no css, it's totally messed up) ! I wrote some way to bypass those restrictions for people living in China here : http://www.zenomatic.com/china/getting-rid-of-chinese-internet-censorship/

  • Why is there so much Mr. T on this site?

  • someone give adam a raise. he's my internet celeb '08 nominee.

  • @Late_Night: Well, I guess America did not expect to see Iraq or Afghanistan disintegrate into chaos either.

  • "what human rights abuses? when there is civil unrest and violence, any government will send troops to restore order."

Do you even know what you're talking about? Or are you just an apologist for totalitarian brutality?

China shot peaceful protesters in Tibet, which started this whole mess.

Tibetans can't peacefully protest now because the US is in Iraq? Are you people for real?

  • @Late_Night: I agree. If America or China were ever wiped off the planet, we would have a modern day Dark Ages. Sudden vacuums in power is dangerous, and is what terrorists aim for.

  • @rdldr1:

Hey, I'm sure Russia would be happy to fill in that void. They're sneaky like that.

  • @labrats5: John Mayer here, in Russia the void fills you... jibba jibberin fool.

  • @djdare: I think the second jib should be a jab... sorry

  • @Late_Night: Simple, the West wants China to remain their lap dogs forever, cranking out goods at low prices. They can only do that if their economy and society stay 3rd rate. The way to keep them a 3rd world is to cause them chaos?

Do you get it now? Class dismissed!

  • @FY9: Amen brotha!

@Noobs-R-Us: Don't be so naive about "the West". China wants to be the lap dogs and they don't care how many of their own will fall to keep the money flowing in. There's a reason why they're artificially devaluing their currency.

  • @ninjatales: It's apparent that you don't know how the world works or how economies develop. Let me teach you a few things. Every country has to go through the same steps to get to a developed economy. There's no such thing as skipping steps. We treated our citizens to the same horrible conditions a hundred years ago. Do you remember learning about that in high school history??? Perhaps you were out back smoking pot when that subject was being taught?

To say that China can somehow perform a miracle and just go from a 3rd world economy to the most powerful nation in the world without mistreatment is just plain dumb and naive. Even today in the U.S., many employers exploit their workers. Why do you think unions are so prevalent in the U.S.?

As far as the currency is concerned. China is looking out for the best interest of China. Nowhere in the United Nations Charter does it say that one nation must do what's in the best interest of the rest of the world or another country. If that's the case, we wouldn't have backed off the Kyoto Treaty or invaded Iraq or blocked China from buying 3Com.

  • @Noobs-R-Us: HS history doesn't bother me as that was over 8 years ago. International history, politics, and economics in college was more interesting.

For great examples on learning to treat their citizens well for developing nations, you won't have to look too far away from China. Japan? South Korea?

I guess I don't know how the world works but neither do you.

    Sweet Baby Ganja!

  • The original article doesn't even talk about internet censorship in China, it just talks about general intellectual property rights rules that many sporting organizations have. So I wonder where the rest of the sources for this news came from? Just opinion?

And where is the evidence of "human rights abuses" in this recent Tibet incident. All of the news sources say that they have been locked out so they don't know the real situation, so how can anyone tell if there were abuses? I haven't seen any news source present evidence except for speculation from either politicians or from the Tibetan exiles.
