Walt Mossberg has confirmed what AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega already hinted at CTIA: the iPhone will be 3G-capable "in 60 days." Mossberg said it 6:53 into this Beet.tv feature. Knowing that it's going to be one year after release, what De la Vega said, and the fact that Walt gets his mitts on the goods way before anyone else, it's only logical to think he is right. We will discover it around June 4.

lets have a look .. what is in 60+ days ? Hmm WWDC comes to my mind ... i wonder what will happen there.
yeah. walt mossberg "predicted" a 3g iphone for last christmas. by software upgrade no less. not to mention he "predicted" flash and mms way back in 1.1.1...... how'd that work out for him?
June 4? Iphone firmware 2.0? 3g iphone? any connections....
Why don't these clowns and their predictions ever get held up to any scrutiny? What happens if (and when) he's wrong? You make enough predictions, you're bound to get one right here and there. Will anyone remember this 'bold' prediction when it turns out wrong?
Obviously not, as he's still getting his name in the media.
Does this mean I should sell my existing iPhone while the market is still hot ? And just live with a crappy phone until the 3G model comes out? ...hmm, decisions, decisions...
Why don't these blog commenters and their criticisms ever get held up to any scrutiny? What happens when they're wrong? You troll enough on enough blogs and you'll be wrong every time. Will anyone remember this bold comment when it turns out to be wrong?
No problem Gizmodo, might as well tip you guys off to get the word out. I really hope this is true, since I would think the firmware upgrade would also come out in 60 days.
He dropped that one pretty casually.
@Gofastmazda: dude, uncle walt is the media. of course his name is in there. i don't know, does it really matter when you get the 3g iphone? or if they're wrong? we all know it will be sometime soon.
Wait, did he just seriously say that the ability of people to be able to watch video content on their phone is as important as the interstate highway system?
meh.
He's no Pogue.
revelation 13: "and on the 12th month the jesus phone would rise again more powerful than before".
@itouchgadgetsinappropriately: i think his point is that, "nostra-walt-mus" over there, has been wrong more time than not recently and posting an article about another one of his "whoopers" while trying to give the impression that his word is gold and can be taken to the bank, is just a little unnecessary....
Give me a 3G with GPS and 32Gigs of memory and my Dad will be inheriting my current phone. It's funny, he generally does not like gadgets, and despises his blackberry, but he really like my iPhone - I think it is the very big virtual buttons!
OOPS!
-Walt Mossberg
I love Moss. Although i'm sure Jobs isn't all smiles atm.
It's possible.
Personally I believe that all commentators and analysts who make these kind of announcements should get 10 lashes for everyone they get wrong.
Apart from the ones who claimed that the iPhone was responsible for RIM's impressive sales figures in 2007. They should just be killed right away.
A glorified idiot with false presumptions...
Can I say more?
is it just me. or does it look like he just said it casually?
more of a "its gonna be 3g soon" and was merely using 60 days as an expression.
oh. and. why oh why did yall post the whole clip?? get to the important stuff.
Meh, fairly safe prediction. He's off by 60 days at the most. Now if you're going to make a prediction, you gotta go out on a limb like Kevin Rose...make some wild prediction and then get laughed at when you are hilariously wrong.
If anyone will know for sure when the 3G iphone is coming it will be Walt, Hey all he got to do is give stevie a call it's not like he don't got his # or anything. He also got some got points there
Must fight twinge of regret at buying T-Mobile BB Curve....
... oh yeah, that's right. Free calls at home and Starbucks (and anywhere else with open WiFi) with my Curve.
Twinge of regret subsiding, subsiding...growing...subsiding.
I hope it will have 32gb of mem.
@itouchgadgetsinappropriately: What does matter is people making all these 'predictions' about upcoming tech, rarely being right, and yet sites like giz continuing to espouse their next prediction as if it's any better a guesstimate than yours or mine, and these 'predictors' having no backlash whenever they are wrong (which is a hell of a lot more often than not).

UK next please O2? every bloody phone is free apart from this bloody American phone.
Americans are is to paying everybody in the UK contract (pay monthly = Free phones aka = crazy iphone sales).

Americans are used to paying and everybody in the UK equates contract to free phone (pay monthly = Free phones aka = crazy iphone sales).

@The Full English Please!!: Price cut my a*s, in order to be elegible users have to sign for 2 years, while most contracts only last 6 months down there, also you can't just pick any calling plan for it, you have to get the higher end one or nothing. iphone did better than expected down there too cause it's not even a 3G phone & there's hardly any edge coverage down. people are paying for internet service that they hardly get at all
A great little speech reduced to an obvious prediction.
@seanmac:
Or throw it in the other guys face when you happen to Amazingly right
I predict either Barrack Obama or John McCain will be the next President of the United States. Wow. Look at me, politico extraordinaire. Where's my obligatory NY Times column and high 6 figure salary?
@Samifumi: Not enough words. You fail!
was there any doubt to the 1 year product cycle for the iphone?
no qwerty pad no dice. ill stick to my crackberry and type type away. who the f browses rich websites on their phone anyway. edge and text based news sites work just fine. instead of complaining about the lack of 3g. complain to the web developers for their lack of a mobile website.
want your fix?
use a laptop
laptops to big to lug?
pay attention driving
not driving?
how lame are you to sit there and check out websites on a 5 inch screen.
WTF is Walt Mossberg?!?!?!?!
who needs 3G ?
we just want a very good cam with a real Flash
a real GPS
and an open iphone that i dont need to hack
@Nick Brickett: He's saying that virtually every other phone in the UK is free. You just then pay a £30 monthly contract on it for 12 months.
@stoleriko: YOU want a very good cam with a real flash. I want internet speeds that don't suck. If you want a decent camera, buy a cybershot phone or - guees what? - a camera! The iPhone is already the best phone on the market for music and web browsing, it's kind of unreasonable to expect them to pack in a carl zeiss lens and a xenon flash.
As for GPS, as long as it doesn't increase the size of the phone significantly, bring it on.
And the point about free phones in the UK being the reason for iPhones lagging sales stands. I wouldn't buy an iPhone until a reliable unlocking method came out because I'm not gonna pay for a phone then tie myself into an 18 months contract that is worse value than my current one. That came with PWNAGE, but now all these rumours of a 3G iPhone have convinced me to wait just a little longer. Lets hope the 3G iPhone gets Pwned quickly!
Yeah, I still remember his Flash prediction.
Ass.
His possibly erroneous jesus phone prediction aside, he has a substantial argument concerning the lack of real broadband here in the US.
@craig_16: What, pray tell, is your point. Let us turn your argument against itself. You write:
if you want a decent camera, buy a cybershot phone or - guees what? - a camera!
Aside from the fact that a camera on a phone is tremendously useful (a lifesaver when you get into an auto accident - lawsuits can be won or lost based on what someone shot with a cameraphone), by your reasoning, why put music on a phone at all? Get an mp3 player. Why bother with the internet? Get an ultraportable computer. Why bother with GPS? Get a map. And while we're on the subject, it's not the size addition from GPS that's the problem; it's the cost.
Stoleriko raises a valid point about the iPhone which is endemic to Apple - failure to add basic features to its products. This is one of Apple's biggest complaints, be it lack of a card reader in its MacBooks or no FM tuner in its iPods (both additions which can be done with ease)
No, a camera with flash is not an unreasonable demand, especially given that it's now the industry standard. GPS does add cost to an already unsubsidized phone. Moreover, because the phone is not subsidized, it is not unreasonable to ask that it be open platform.
Things a stock iPhone does not have: the ability to add applications; true GPS; worry-free unlocking; 3G capability. Add to that the savings I get from out-of-the-box WiFi calling (a T-Mo BB Curve feature NOT on the iPhone), and there are the reasons why I re-upped with T-Mo instead of going to AT&T for the iPhone 2:
what the iPhone doesn't have and won't have.
That was freaking hilarious!!!
wow so nonchalant about it. I'm surprised the people around him didnt drop their jaws...
@richillion: roflmao
good thing for t-mobile USA customers, they dont have to worry about this at all since their 3g network won't be compatible with the iPhone...
@OMG! Ponies!: agree. The guy has it backwards. A camera has more use than the speed of the Internet. If you want highspeed net stick with wifi..
This just in... Walt says there will be an updated Mac Mini in the next six months, and new iPods within 2 years. This guy knows all!
Omg...he takes 9ever to say anything! Boooooring...
I definately think the new 3G iPhone is going to be launched along with slew of really cool apps at WWDC. Should make for a very interesting 4th quarter for Apple.
What is a budcase anyway?
Speaking of delivering quality video via the internet, has anybody checked out www.pitchfork.tv yet? The 24 hour high-def ad-free streaming music video site launched this morning and it's very, very cool.
@OMG! Ponies!: I see your point. Maybe I should have been clearer. If you need a decent camera on your phone, maybe the iPhone isn't marketed towards you. Personally, I don't find the camera on my phone as useful as I would find the browser on the iPhone.
did he just refer to me as a geek "very narrow portion of geeks". my plasma has a vga input on it, isn't it just natural to connect it to its own media center file server? and on my dlp tv it was just natural to get a divx/dvd player (was same price) so that my dvd collection will take up less space when you can fit 6 divx movies on one disc. all im saying is why do people pay to see commercials when they can get the show w/o them for free!?
