At last! The latest beta version of Apple's iPhone 1.2.0 firmware gives you the possibility of saving pictures straight from Safari and into the Photo Album. We tried and it works: just hold your finger against an image for a longer time than usual and the popup dialog will appear. The applications are many, like saving friends' Facebook images, save loads of NSFW pics in Flickr, set iPhone backgrounds using those (or snatch our exclusive iPhone backgrounds), and perhaps the most obvious one: online porn collecting for offline porn watching. I wish you iPhone guys could get Opera Mobile 9.5
About time!
Ok so let me get this right. You hold your finger in a spot and contexual pop up menu comes up. AMAZING! What will Apple think of next. Oooh... I know. How about the ability to select images and text in one place and some how create a replica of them in another!
Sweet glorious day, iPhone 2.0 is shaping up nicely.
Copy & paste and a universally applied landscape keyboard may not be so out of reach afterall.
Finally and I hope this works on the iPod Touch too, fantastic feature.
Don't desperate folks, it's only some years before we get to firmware 10.0.0 and eventually get MMS.
@draconis2941: hehehe bump!
@draconis2941: "What will Apple think of next. Oooh... I know. How about the ability to select images and text in one place and some how create a replica of them in another!"
Whoa there skippy, that's like witchcraft! That ability is decades away! Like...1980's technology.
Can we add a "Open in new window" button? Please?
At this rate, how long will it take Apple to get all those standard features into the iPhone? 2-3 years?
@draiko: so true.
@workingonyourinvoice: Yes please!!!! I've been waiting for them to add the Open in new window feature for the longest time...
I can't believe Apple's just now getting around to adding basic functionality. Lame.
pretty cool.
@RobotVampire: As long as they're implemented in the best way, I'm a patient man. Every feature they've added since launch that was not originally included has been perfectly thought out. Honestly, what does your comment add to the conversation? What are you saying that hasn't been said by a hundred other commenters (who probably don't even own one, and therefore can only guess as to the functionality)??
Not trying to attack, just genuinely curious.
Ok I'll say it, IE on Windows mobile has had this capability for a while now. Yes that IE, with all its flaws.
The iphone has a slick interface, But it has yet to offer some basic smartphone as well as some basic regular 'ol dumbphone features. What do you do with it once your done pinching photos and need to get some work done?
oh, blessed sweetness. It's about time. BUT as said above, go ahead and add "open in new window" to that list, as well.
Looks good. I used to do this alot when I had a blackberry and I've missed it. Can't wait.
Seriously folks, chill the hell out. Apple releases one of the most revolutionary mobile devices and you are all whining like little princesses. Relax.
Features will come and you will still have issues to be upset at... like every other freakin' device in existence. No device or software package is perfect, but the attitude is retarded. The iPhone will eventually have 3G and MMS. The other nit-pick items will come in some form or another, just cool your heels.
good to know they are adding these basic functions. Not that i really need them, I always thought browsing internet on a mobile device is itself a lame and tedious thing to do; But mobile safari is simple and smooth, combined with iphone's touchscreen already changed my view on mobile browsing and satisfies my everyday need.
However, adding flash support would be nice...
In the mean time, Safari-on-iPhone has the biggest share of mobile browsing by far, presumably because mobile browsing just sucks so hard on anything but.
Why brag about a feature you have that you don't even use because you don't even want to use the browser that has the feature?
This is good news for iPhone/Safari users, who use a browser, despite (you have to admit) all its shortcomings, is the best fucking web browser for mobiles, period.
So before criticizing the lameness of iPhone/Safari for not having some basic functionality, why don't you talk about the lameness of other mobile browsers for not having the most important functionality -- the ability to browse the web with comfort, ease, and finesse?
The thought of someone masturbating to images on their iPhone/iPod touch disturbs the hell out of me, and is probably one of the last keys to throw open the gates of hell.
Nice. I wonder how long before the iPhone gets the features the rest of use on a day-to-day basis.
This is a feature I use all the time on my mobile. I can save photos from sites to my SD card and MMS them to others, or attach them to an email.
Style over substance should be the new Apple slogan.
Seriously Zevgreen, is it "revolutionary" because it was the first phone to include internet and MP3 playback Or is it because of all the Ad dollars poured into its release to make it seem like no device had every done this before?
Oh, and I am Relaxed. @zevgreen:
@zevgreen: @Dearhaw:
"Apple releases one of the most revolutionary mobile devices and you are all whining like little princesses."
It's this attitude that makes people want to pick it apart. If the fans weren't so smug and superior there wouldn't be so many people taking shots when there's an opening.
hmmm, porn...we all need porn
@workingonyourinvoice: Maybe my comment adds nothing to the conversation, I'm sure many feel that to be true, I was just speaking my mind. It's great that they are adding the functionality now, it's lame that they didn't care enough about their fanbase to include a basic function out of the gate. I think most would have had a poorly implemented "save as" available at release that was smoothed out later than none at all for the first x months.
My winmo 6 phone may not have the style and cool factor the iphone does (yes, mobile IE blows goats. Come on Skyfire beta 2 and firefox mobile), but all the basic functionality and much more was there right out of the box.
Not an Apple hater, just don't see why it's suppose to be manna from heaven when Apple decides to finally get around to finishing their product after the fact.
I've honestly never needed this, but I'm glad to have it.
@draiko:
Because Opera is clearly SO much better than mobile safari...
[gizmodo.com]
Oh, right....since we didn't already have this option months ago with a jailbroken iPhone. Thanks for catching up Apple.
@RobotVampire: If this were a mediocre product that doesn't do anything special, then I would agree with you. For what the phone does (and does exceptionally well), periodic updates and delayed features are perfectly acceptable to most. It's not so much that they don't care about the fanbase enough to add simple features, they just chose a particular feature set to have available (and perfectly functional) as a realistic goal for launch. I guarantee that if they'd pushed the release back even just a week just to iron out some "basic feature", there would be severe backlash from the community.
Doesn't work on the current ipod touch 1.1.3.
doesn't work on ma touch?? come'on apple... :/
@workingonyourinvoice:
Not just the Apple/Mac community, but also AT&T. Apple even delayed OS X so that they could put most of their efforts into this. My guess is that they couldn't just take the kitchen sink approach because it would seriously mess with their timetable.
@Dearhaw: Well said.
There's already a thing in installer that does this, its called screenshot. All you have to do is press the home button and the volume control and it takes a shot of whatever your doing.
I don't think it has to do with timetables or functionality at release. I think that the touch screen interface has different control mechanisms. Apple didn't want to introduce a way to do something and then change it.
For example, if windows vista had changed the keyboard short-cuts for cut and paste to something else, a lot of people would be screaming even if it was easier and more functional to have them be something else.
So I think its more that they hadn't figured out what they wanted to commit as the method to do these various things.
ROFL @ draconis and greg3d. Nice to see some good ol' ironic humor... you know, the kind that sets Steve Job's pants on fire.
I love the irony of Apple fanbois telling the yucksters to "chill", too- THAT is priceless. Hey fanbois: take yer own medicine.
And I picture Craig Ferguson exclaiming "that's witchcraft!" after reading greg3d's joke. He would surely love this thread. : D
Oh, and Dearhaw: I'll see your Safari on the iPhone and raise you microb on the Nokia N810. BEST friggin' overall browsing performance, hands down.
@RobotVampire:
Apple may have released an "incomplete product" according to many of you, but are you not realizing why?
a) They get the product out to make anxious customers happy, making money WHILE they perfect the product.
b) They show off their firmware updates, revolutionary to cell phones, all of which have been appreciated by users.
c) They get user feedback regarding the interface/lacking features. Apple then implements positive changes and more people get wet over their product.
Pick them apart all you want. But my experience has been amazing. I've gone through two iPhones (from dropping them) and I literally walked into the store and they handed me two new ones, no questions asked. I have not paid for any phone-replacement-plans of any sort. Badass? Yes.
@zevgreen:
I agree, this bs goes on all too long!!! Chill people, Jesus Christ!
Faslane
ROFL... I was waiting to see how long it would be before another defensive fan rode to the rescue. Careful guys, you're exceeding the irony quota!
@Texrat: Dude the N810 isn't even in the same category of device.
@Texrat:
And I'll raise you double with Firefox on my EeePC. What's your fucking point?
Call me (literally) when your N8** gets the physical dimensions and weight comparable to, or smaller than an iPhone... and, oh yeah, when it can actually make calls over a cellular network ;-p
@working: he made a broad statement.
@dearhaw: my point is you are suffering irony overload.
Call me when your iPhone has bluetooth and true GPS. As for cell calls, VOIP is a fractio of the price. ; )
