Seriously, if you buy this thing, you're an idiot. The LapStrap is supposed to save you the trouble of bagging your laptop by looping it around the hinge and closing the lid. But I have issues with this thing. I can imagine the laptop lid flying open while on the go, almost ensuring destruction. Muggers would have a field day if people used the LapStrap on city streets. And my biggest problem is that the LapStrap is nothing but marketing hype and a $25 pricetag. It's just a messenger bag shoulder strap fashioned into a loop. No thanks. At least they're not trying to sell you a Velcro pad to glue on the bottom of your laptop and the back of your jacket.
There's nothing like suddenly running into a lamp post (I was shoved!!!) to remind you why it is necessary to protect things that you care about, namely computers that a goodly amount of cash to purchase.
With more and more laptops using magnetic latches, this is is a huge disaster waiting to happen.
Horrible product idea that I'm sure many people will consider a great tool.
"if you buy this thing, you're an idiot."
seconded. that can't be good for the hinge, and carrying a laptop around without at least some sort of superficial protection is just irresponsible.
$25 to use a $2 strap retardedly?
Is this from the same company that made the batphones?
My lappie clicks open sometimes when it is just sitting there. This is a disaster waiting to happen.
Not to mention that alot of laptops these days don't even have latches on the lids (late model dells and toshibas specifically), so there's literally nothing but a small spring keeping your laptop from crashing.
If i want a smashed laptop I'll drop it off a building and save myself $25
It would be viable if you have a ThinkPad :D
Those things are indestructible (immune to lampposts XD) and they have latches for closing the lid.
Love my T61p!
I take your point, Adrian, but I think the idea has potential. What if small notebooks were designed specifically with straps in mind and were built with padded lids, bottoms, and corners. I'd actually move the strap to the front corners of the notebook rather than the rear so that the screen could be opened while the machine was still slung over the shoulder. I can't think of how many times I wanted to pull an address, phone number, or confirmation number off my notebook while I'm standing in the street, in a hotel lobby, or at the airport.
Adrian: Shsssshhh. This product is a government program designed to weed out the week and stupid among us.
By purchasing this, a person gets put on a list of useless people, and will be the first against the wall when we have to cull the herd.
LapStraps, UMPC's, ... Just carry your fucking laptop, you jelly-armed pussies!!
@zenpoet: dammit, should have been "weak," not week.
Seriously terrible design! I looked at the animation in the link. Not only is the relatively thick webbing wedged between the screen and keyboard halves (adding what has to be undesirable pressure where none was meant to be) but the inches-across webbing would actually work as a fulcrum to open your laptop while in transit. Idiotic.
Well, you got the tag right.
It's not just the hinge and clasp that are at risk, what about all the ports? and dignity?
Whenever I need to move my laptop around and I don't want to bother with a backpack, I use what I like to call my "arm."
It cost me nothing. Well, I guess it got it as a gift. And I have 2 of them, so I always have a backup in case 1 of them is in use.
There is one born every minute... one fool who would actually think that this product is a good idea that is.
@bosskev: "adding what has to be undesirable pressure where none was meant to be"
Just think how YOU would like it if someone lifted YOU around by a strap between your legs? >.0
Ouch! Thanks, @DaOtter, for anthropomorphizing this item in a way I wouldn't have thought of. Now I'll be doubled over in virtual pain the rest of the day...
I'll take six!
@DaOtter: Rappeling is fun, especially if you tie your own swiss seat with a length of plain rope ^^
its a pretty bad idea, hell i had my laptop stolen, with the bag it was in, and it wasn't even a proper laptop bag!
also this reminded me "I can imagine the laptop lid flying open while on the go, almost ensuring destruction" of something that actually happened to me.
i had a backpack with a laptop inside which i'd forgotton to zip up, i decided to remove something from my bag and swung it over my shoulder.
Swing shot anyone? the laptop FLEW atleast 2 feet across the pavement and hit with an utter crash, and then my jaw hit the pavement too.
it still worked untill i spilt drink over it!
@Stueymon: "had my laptop stolen...i had a backpack with a laptop inside which i'd forgotton to zip up...it still worked untill i spilt drink over it!"
Hey, Stueymon, you know how I'd said you could borrow my laptop until you got yours replaced? We might need to revisit that plan.
This might work ok if you had a ToughBook or other super-durable device that wouldn't miss having no protection.
But then if you had a ToughBook you could probbly just drag it along behind you on a leash or something.
$25?!?! For a damn strap? You've got to be kidding me. I picked up a neoprene rubber case/laptop condom for $20 and I slide it into my canvas messenger bag. Perfect. Didn't have to buy a new bag and it's protected.
@zenpoet: This product is a government program designed to weird out the we[a]k and stupid among us.
Your comment reminds me of the secrete government program that is designed to do the same. I believe it's code name is Apple.
... and now you can strangled while being robbed of your laptop.
This is like carrying my money clip in a plastic ziplock, tied around my neck with string.
@bosskev: i actually have two laptops now... and since the tossing / drink spilling incident i've had... 2... ok i'm accident prone! but the two laptops are benefits of insurance and a university :D both free!
