Now we're not sure what's going on with Keyport now. Two weeks ago they managed to ship a unit to NOTCOT to fool around with, but apparently there's SOMETHING going on in the manufacturing process that makes it unsuitable for shipping it out to paying customers. Keyport told Josh five months after he paid and shipped them his keys that they were going to refund his money, but keep his keys. Wha?
We wanted to write and let you know that we sincerely appreciate the patience you have shown in receiving your Keyport. While innovative design and quality craftsmanship are certainly tenets to which Keyport is steadfastly committed, it is our customers who serve as Keyport's foundation, and your satisfaction is our top priority. Therefore, we would like to refund your money in its entirety and hold on to your keys. Once we have completed the final design modifications, we will send you your new Keyport Slide. After you receive it, you may pay us what you think is appropriate. We intend on earning your trust and delivering what we have promised. Again, thank you for your patience over this long haul. We look forward to your feedback once you have received your Slide. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
On the same note, they've had my keys since December but haven't actually shipped anything to me yet. They're very lax in return emails as well. It's sad to say this since the Keyport is such a good idea, but you should probably stay away from these guys until they get their manufacturing, shipping, and customer support issues down. [Thanks Josh!]

Again. You paid $300 for a keyfob?
Although I do really like the design/concept. It reminds me of pulling out a knife....on my door's locks...
You all deserve it. I have a chain that connects my keys and wallet so there always in the same place. I get compliments all the time, people think I paid 25 dollars for it at Spencer's. Nope, it's just a choke chain, $1 from Dollar Tree. You guys just reaped what you sewed.
They know where you live and have your keys?
Thats a bummer...it really does seem like a cool idea. I'ts not really that complicated - what the hell could the hold up be???
...and they are located at 10475 NW 28th Street? (or was that 10481? 10475? 10471?)
Maybe they're keeping his keys in case whatever he thinks 'is appropriate' is not enough.
$10 for our expertly crafted Keyport!?!? You know that we have the keys to your house, right? Don't force us to take your plasma, dude. We'll do it!
well since I never thought the keyport was a good idea to begin with, I don't have any problems staying away from them. Sorry to hear about your trouble with them though.
You mailed your keys and your money along with your home address to someone you don't know. hmmmm... I have a Golden Gate bridge for sale.
@Mitch: Maybe he had one of those 'keys to the city' that the mayor gives out for saving his poodle from an alligator...
"After you receive it, you may pay us what you think is appropriate."
tree-fiddy!
That's crazy. Someone should have told them to test out with dummy keys rather than some dummy's keys.
But seriously, they owe those customers some compensation for the non-returned keys. Someone better call up Johnny C.!
Can the "appropriate amount" be a negative figure? I'd send them a bill rather than a cheque just to see their reaction.
I'm the Gatekeeper, are you the Keymaster?
appropriate amount:
"Two dollars and fifteeeeen cents!!"
(let's see who remembers that quote...)
@MagnoliaBoy: a chain that connects your keys to your wallet? why do you think this is something new? grungy deathmetal people were doing this in the 1980s, and here you are, 20+ years later STILL doing it. SAD.
@bosskev: if they're not located there...that is probably where they are shipping those non-returned keys!
@MagnoliaBoy: If you're dog and your wallet are both on a chain...You might be a redneck.
Yes, it's a huge hassle to have to wait so long, and they apparently understand that. Personally, while I'd be disappointed that it's taking so long, I would be surprised to see decency from such companies. Most would refund your money, give back your keys and tell you to go away. That's if they would even start giving refund for long waits. More commonly, most companies would keep your money and your keys for as long as it takes until they can get you a unit. I think that their gesture is a good one, and shows that some companies still have at least a little heart. The fact that they're going to give you a $300 keyfob (eventually) and tell you to pay what you think, is fair, rare, and amazing in today's marketplace.
Frankly, when I get my keyfob, I'll be giving them at least $100 (so long as it's up to quality par). Yes, I know it's a good sum of money for a little metal thing that holds keys, but it's a luxury item, and so it gets to be expensive if it wants to.
"We intend on earning your trust..."
by keeping my keys?
@MagnoliaBoy: Now have that chain connected to your balls, and you'll always know....(Denis Leary)
@tutelary: Um, No, I didn't think it was new, It was a comment about cost, and is uber convenient. Way to read into a comment.
@Hanke: I have a wife for that.
@SgtMac02: Nope, I AM a redneck. Hello? MAGNOLIA-Boy?
The intro made it sound like the company was totally screwing him, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all.
They are still going to send him what he paid for, but they're refunding his money because of the delays...
Sounds like an upstanding thing to do to me...
Sounds like a good deal to me.
Wait for the china knock offs that you make yourself with a pair of sheers, a ratail file and a total dupe of the fob.
Done.
Sounds a lot like the way LL Bean got started.
@SgtMac02:
Was it Better off Dead? I want My 2 Dollars?
Had to try, can't remember is there were cents involved...
Faslane
TANK GIRL!!!!
@SgtMac02:
Why are these people suckers/dummies/whatever else you guys called them? They just got their money back and will still get the fob for whatever they want to pay. Wow. Terrible deal?
I'm surprised no one has said this yet, but they're going to keep his keys because they're also going to put them in a new fob and send them back to him. they're not keeping them, ya know, permanently. Or maybe everyone thinks that's too obvious to post and I'm being an idiot. Either way, sweet deal.
why does the article construe this as a negative? they're keeping his keys to send him the item once they get their kinks sorted out, and expect only whatever the customer thinks is appropriate payment.
i'm sure if you asked nicely for your keys back, they'd probably return those to you, too.
@Papsky: HAHA! I'm not the only one that thought of that when I read that line :)
@MagnoliaBoy..
" You reap what you sow..." as in the "scattering there of..." but it doesn't really apply.
The chain idea is cool though...
Too bad if you've moved house or sold your car by the time your keyfob actually arrives.
Wow and I thought the majority of people didn't use keys at all. (In the traditional sensr anyway) My can has Key scan. You know, walk close to your car and the doors unlock for you. My house was built in 1984 and it also has key scan.
So I'm thinking it's way too late to bring a product like that to market anyway. Send his key back to him, and close up shop!
Besides didn't someone make a similar product in the 70's where you put your keys in a flap of leather and then in your pocket? Or am I missing some amazing feature of this thing.

Sorry about the spelling errors, I really should learn how to type, (or correct before post)
