If you are among those fortunate enough to come home to a big, beautiful TV every night—don't take it for granted. The beginnings of our obsession with large televisions were, in a word, humble. If this were the '50s you would be walking to work naked in the snow only to unwind at night in front of a puny 16- or 17-inch TV (at best) with a crappy picture and only a few channels—and you would have loved it. The folks at Electronic House have put together a history of our obsession with big TVs, and that got me thinking—how big is your TV?
Did you place your vote? I hope you are doing better than our friend Michael Scott:

I have a 46inch LCD that I absolutely love.
Why do I have to click once to vote and again to see results? Anyone else getting this or is it just me?
27" Pawn Shop TV Yo! Only cost me $100.
My house is exactly like that Chase commercial, only I'm still waiting for fiancée to say "Ok, you're right, we need a new TV."
Been looking at the new Toshiba Regza 1080p line. The 42" is only $1199, so it may be close....
I'm a college student. My TV can't be enormous because I only really want one for my bedroom (drunk parties around my tv? No thanks) and I want to be able to move it as I'm still an apartment moving around phase of my life.. I have a 32" HD a little farther then the foot off my bed and it is wondrous. I watch a ton of movies and have a Wii, so that's basically all I use it for (TV sucks). Not too big, definitely not small.
32" Toshiba CRT.
Big, heavy and a beautiful SD picture.
One 40" LCD, one 27" TV/VCR Combo where the VCR eats tapes (though it hasn't in 6 years since I don't have them anymore) and hopefully a nice 50+" for the basement by mid-summer.
50" Pioneer plasma. It's a love affair. Just talked my friend into buying a 40" Samsung LCD after having a 20" CRT for too many years. I also gave him my old Harmony remote. You're welcome.
In my room, i have a 50" plasma hanging on the wall. In the living room we have a 65" Mitsu DLP and in the basement we have a 57" Mitsu DLP.... I love my dad
"...and the real scandal, Sophia, is when I went over to see their 'home theater'?"
"Yes? Go on!"
"Well! Just before Bernard dimmed the lights, he proudly announced, 'Get ready to feast your eyes on 80 inches of cinematic glory!' "
"No!"
"Yes! I mean, can you imagine? Someone who still measures their TV...in inches?"
"Shocking. Simply shocking."
32" LCD upgrading to a 60" plasma. Can I hear a Hell Yeah!
@strider_mt2k: Mine is 17" inch CRT! I agree you can't beat SD quality.
size isn't everything, but 50" here
...someone had to say it
60" Sony KDS-60A2000 rear projection rules!
@workingonyourinvoice: 27 inch, yard sale - 20 bucks :) nutting wrong with it at all.. they were also selling a 52 inch projection for 300$ but didnt have a truck to carry it off in.
Currently I have a 32" CRT... I'm planning on upgrading to a 52" LCD later this year.
50" Samsung DLP.
450sq ft. apartment.
Ceiling mounted projector going onto a 120" screen but it's much easier just to say 10 feet. Perhaps you don't consider it a TV but I can watch TV on it so bugger off!
Come on, I know someone can beat that!
62" Toshiba dlp here. Great tv, only $1799 canadian.
@bimplebean: I'm having the same problem plus my comments are getting delayed, creating some double posts here and there :(
@bimplebean: That's just you. I'm using FireFox 3 Beta 5 if you want to compare browsers.
I use a projector so theoretically the sky is the limit for screen size. Realistically it's like 82"-ish.
50", but not an HD, sadly.
You neglect to mention that the naked snow trek is uphill (both ways, naturally) and that this was before this 'new fangled' global warming when people REALLY knew what cold was.
I digress. 45" here.
I've had a 720p projector shooting onto a wall with about 120" image for a few years.
Picked up a 32" 720p for the living room a couple years ago.
Waitn' for OLED or Laser.
65 inch HD projection here :-)
Kind of bulky though.
100+" InFocus IN-76 HD projector in the basement
80" InFocus IN-72 st def projector upstairs
47" Olevia 747i for a monitor in the office
Can anyone tell me what sunlight is?
@docwatson2k: I could match that because I have the same size screen, but truth be told I purposely frame the projector image slightly smaller.
I also don't like upscaling so I tend to watch things in their native resolution, so really only 720p material and higher are that big.
I find it does an excellent job of making up for my tiny penis.
42" lcd 1080p. Feel like it's too small now.
I don't have a TV. I do have a 20" 4:3 TFT hooked up to a Mac Mini on HTPC duty, so I guess 20" then.
52" 1080i (no..sadly no 1080p)plazzy here. I still have my 32" Sony trinitron in my bedroom. Wish I had an LCD there though.
Sony KDL-52XBR4 1080p LCD HDTV. Paid for in cash than you very much.
34" Toshiba HD 1080i CRT...good but not what I want. The wife won't let me upgrade.
56" Samsung DLP
Its the mirrors...
But seriously, playing mariokart doubldash, 4 way is like each of you having your own big ass TV... and playing Call of Duty 4 is like.. well.. killing some extremist... GRENATA!!!!!
50" Samsung Plasma
27" Westinghouse LCD
27" Phillips tube
65'' DLP in the living room, 32'' LCD in my bedroom.
I gots 2. 1 40 inch Samsung LCD in the bedroom and a 52 inch Pannyin the living room.
@docwatson2k:
Same here. Sanyo Z2000 projecting on a 120" on a screen made out of blackout cloth. $1750 for the Sanyo, $70 for the cloth and frame material.
I have a 19" crt that I got for $80 about 6 years ago now.
I'd like to upgrade but I can't justify spending the money on a huge TV and there's no point to anything less than 1080p. So for the time being I just watch stuff on my computer monitor, which is a respectable 24".
42" Vizio...love it!
Olevia 37" LCD in the kids playroom and an Olevia 42" LCD in the family room.
Great story about the 37", I made it impossible for my wife to refuse getting it. We were moving ourselves cross country 3 years ago and had a 32" Sony Trinitron CRT (awesome TV btw). But weighed a freakin' ton. I said, "You know, honey, that Sony is just so heavy and awkward to move, and we really don't have a good way to box it up or protect it in the truck. How about we get one of these LCD screens, a lot lighter and easier to move, and we can use the box and packing to keep it safe in the move"
Had the LCD the next day :) She couldn't defend against logic of that magnitude.
I'm one of those people that doesn't own a TV, just gravitates to roommate with people that do. My most recent roomie moved out and took his 46" Sony with him. :(
I currently have 3 tv's
One is 36" Sony
Another is 42" Panasonic
And the Last is 52" Sony Wega
I want to trade in the 36" for a Plasma tv with 1080p or if someone finally releases 1200p i'll buy that too =]
Even though i dont use my tv that much if i do get a plasma im going to hook my computer up to it directly so i can watch all that content on my hard drives on my new hdtv.
32' Samsung, w/ 5.1 surrond sound system. Dose fine by me :)
No TV in my house. Don't want one. Have a flat screen monitor for Consoles and iMac for Movies. Done.
32inch Dynaflat CRT TV Samsung
At the time I bought it, it was brand new at $400 (From it's $650) retail price. While it can only do 1080i, but it has two HDMI slots so that makes up for it. I couldn't go wrong with the price at the time.
I got a 37" Sharp Aquios LCD for $700. It's 1080i, not p, but it still looks kick ass.
58" Panasonic in the bedroom, 64" Pioneer Elite in the living room.
27" LCD at 1080i.
Looking to upgrade to a 42" plasma 1080p in the next couple months though.
ps. this is in a bedroom... otherwise I'd go all the way to 50.
100 inches. Projector. I watch TV on it, and it is lovely.
34 inch Sony CRT HDTV. Every time I turn it on the "bowmmmmb" sound makes me happy. It's my sole hdtv until they come up with a replacement OLED. Luckily I can wait, I'm just hoping i don't have to move because it weight 200lbs.
I usualy have to vote, go to a blank page, and then hit the back button to see the page again.
50" Pioneer Plasma. LCD and DLP sucks!!!
