Whoa, we didn't see this one coming. Our tipster Kahri just took this shot of 10475, and it looks like Psystar just put up a "Psystar" vinyl sign in the window and a "Open Computing" on their door. Very interesting.
There've been a couple developments on Psystar since last week we just updated our post with. First, it seems like we've finally found the reason why Psystar changed their address from 10481 to 10475. Second, and this one is unconfirmed so far, but it looks like credit cards submitted to Psystar might be getting weird charges on them. Take a look.

I'm curious why anyone would have trusted these fly-by-nighters in the first place. The cat and mouse game is entertaining to watch, but they're the last people I would be giving my credit card info to.
Anyone else reminded of the recurring Jon Lovitz character?
"Yeah.... we need to relocate for new space for our, uh, production facilities. Yeah...that's the ticket."
@ChoadNamath: Ya know, there is a chance this is legit. They may have just had a rough start. Give it a few months, or wait for people to get them and review them.
OK, the credit card thing? That is really f'n weird.
I've tried to give these guys the benefit of the doubt and defend them from all the other Giz posters who seem to want to sharpen their knives on anyone who dares to offend the Great And Mighty Jobs, but I'm starting to think that they may have a point on this one.
Those phone/fax numbers look super fake!
No idea or opinion on whether Psystar is for real...but it's fun to imagine Jobs and Wozniak withstanding this kind of online scrutiny back when they were working out of Jobs' parents' garage. "LOL I went to the address and it's just a cheap ranch in a neighborhood these guys are fake d00dz Hewlitt will so sue them LOL."
Well i guess the shi*t just hit the fan, why are they processing the payments on a off shore bank????? in Netherlands??? Good luck filing 39 $9.99 charge backs to a off shore bank, i guess you can kiss that $399 goodby
@OMG! Ponies!: "Anyone else reminded of the recurring Jon Lovitz character?"
Does it count if I'm reminded of him after you reminded me of him?
Who buys a computer from a company whose name is a homonym for Pissy Star?
Red flag number 14235348 and counting...
Looks almost photoshoped
is it just me or does that looks HORRIBLY photoshopped?
I ordered THREE different machines!! I paid for ONE eith a credit card, ONE with a Western Union wire, and then ONE with a direct bank transfer, but I had to give them my bank account info and Social Security number to qualify for the 10% Discount on the third one.
Im really excited to get these! Its gonna be so cool!
@Tayng: Yeah, hard to tell because of the shitty quality of the cellphone camera.
The difference was that Jobs and Wozniak were very active in the homebrew computer club, so they had a reputation to begin with. And for the most part, the people they dealt with knew what they were woking with and had some knowledge of them.
One of the downsides of the web, as opposed to face-to-face connections, is that with only a touch of skill, you can create a site that looks like you're a multi-million dollar company. Psystar's website looks like that of a large computer.
If they were honest and if they were smart, after their first outage, they would have put a notice on their website, explaining who they were, the size they were, that they were caught by surprise by the reaction but they were ramping up to handle it. Explain that yes, we are working out of a home for now, but we're almost ready to close on a deal for a business office and warehouse.
Yes, some would have said "I'm not going to invest with a startup", but others would have said "ah, startup problems, understood."
Maybe Psystar is paying off the 6,000,000 dollar building one $9.99 charge at a time. To a Dutch landlord. In the Netherlands. In US Dollars.
Maybe not.
Nothing good can come out of this. you play with fire...
@discounteggroll: ...you get roast marshmallows?
ummmm am I the only one who is looking at that pic and thinking "thats totally photoshoped."
@Tayng: @lafond66:
Yeah, I thought it was a joke at first. I guess their tipster is reliable, though? I've been following this story on and off, so I'm not sure...
@Falconfire: Nope, a few others said it already too :P
I agree... and would like to point out the "Decal"/sign/whatever is going over top of the door... that seems pretty unlikely to me.
@Tayng, @lafond66, @Falconfire: Going with Jason here and saying it's probably the really shitty phone cam. I don't see why Kahri would photoshop the logo onto the building when the last three reports filed were of Psystar not being where they said they were.
@Falconfire: No I thought that on first glance, and I second glance I'm almost certain it is, look the letters go across the bars.
@Gordon_Shumway: Yeah, this guy's been sending us tips and photos since the start, so we believe he's reliable.
Because it looks like the vinyl graphic application also covers the door frame and the window frames... which is looking really strange.
That looks really horribly photoshopped. Either that or the photo really is that bad, I mean, most fake photoshoppers at least put in some effort.
That pic is photoshopped, man.
I hope PsyStar puts Apple out of business. Heres hoping for the best ^_^
Because he wants press? fan the flames kinda thing?
Remind me why we care enough to have an article on this crap every day? Is Giz trying valiantly to break into the investigative reporting niche with this?
And yeah.. I agree... It looks Photoshopped. Since when do vinyl stickers go OVER the frames of windows on the outside?
@Jason Chen: perhaps it was a PissyStar cellphone that took the picture.
(One bit of strangely edifying corroboration... note the inappropriate parking job in the handicap space...)
I run my business out of my apartment. I'd be pretty pissed if some web blog sent a guy out and posted pictures of my place and started spreading rumors that I wasn't legit, killing my business before it even got off the ground.
Now, I don't know if these guys are legit. Maybe they're not. But it seems like you ought to have some evidence that they're defrauding people before you smear their name.
You could be setting yourself up for a lawsuit otherwise.
Of course if they do turn out to be legit then you may have just given them thousands of dollars in free advertising... which I guess would make up for it.
There is also a possibility they're a startup and they didn't have any money to rent a space or build any computers, so they decided to take orders enough to pay for them to get started and they're just now trying to put the computers together. Maybe they built a prototype but have to order all the parts. Who knows. Not the most legitimate way to start a business if that's the case, but if they deliver the product in a reasonable amount of time, no harm done I suppose.
The fact that the letters and logo are visible over the steel supports between the windows seems to make it completely evident that this is not real, unless I'm missing something?
No, that's totally photoshopped, and very poorly I might add.
These guys are ass clowns and scammers. If you want to run OSX buy a damn Mac, or just build your own rig. The shadiness of the credit card billing alone is enough to make me cut and run.
@islandhopper: If your serious, what the hell were you thinking?
@Elliuotatar: I'll concede that these maybe a bunch of guys putting a startup together with string and chewing gum, but they obviously haven't though ANYTHING through, including anticipating the possible rush of interested buyers. If this is legit (which I doubt) they need someone with some honest startup\business experience, and a far more polished PR and marketing approach...
@Elliuotatar: Outside of Gizmodo, I haven't heard of any rumors. I see that you have a little empathy for the fellow man and that is cool. But remember, this is still a blog page, no lawsuits will become from reading or posting on Giz unless . . . Psystargate has begun!
Take a look at the lettering that is supposedly on a sign BEHIND the window, you can clearly see it overlaid on top of the metal framing OUTSIDE the window. Poor photoshop job if you ask me.
@riqgeez: No,no, it's a "FarGate".
@Elliuotatar: If these guys are legit, they are receiving millions of dollars worth of publicity any startup business would be loving more than a New York Governor loves his 3:00-4:00 pm meeting in a private hotel room.
@Gadgetdon: i more had in mind the "can't wait for these guys to fail!" mentality that (I believe) comes with online attention and anonymity.
PCWorld visited the office: [news.yahoo.com]
Still don't buy it. It all sounds like an even more frantic version of Timothy Roberts' PR spin back-pedaling. Covering ass in reverse. And that picture is flat out shady, man. When you go snooping, take an actual camera. Shitty photos are only kosher for Bigfoot.
Don't you have to worry about uncle sam if you run a business in the US & process your payments off shore???
I call photoshop.
@DaOtter: maybe that's the answer. They have him buiding the computers and they had to keep moving till they had a big enough building that he didn't hit his head on the light fixtures.
Oh, and he can only count to 10 and they let him process the cards, too.
See? It all makes sense now. And you guys were all claiming fraud.
I have to agree with daylus!
Looks like photoshop to me. I work with PS all day everyday. Looks odd that part of the "Y" is over the top part of the door and then part of it is not. Looks like and image of the logo was overlaid on the image of the building.
Looks like the site is built on Joomla....
@szrimaging: Thanks for the link, very interesting read.
Jeesus CHRIST people. Some of you would think your genitals were photoshopped if you didn't have to piss out of them.
@szrimaging: Very interesting article indeed. It almost seems
