Leigh over at Kotaku did some digging around about the rumored Xbox 360 Wiimote, questioning all the parties involved (Microsoft, Rare, Gyration) and discovered some interesting facts. The most important one is that Gyration isn't working on it, but Motus probably is—they already have a precursor to it called the "Darwin".
Motus says their version of the device, possibly tied to Microsoft ("it looks like Microsoft is coming up with something, and we have something"), which will help pick up gesture-heavy games like Harry Potter's Wand Magic Waggle sell better on the 360.
No real conclusion was reached since Microsoft repeated their usual "we haven't announced anything like that," line and reiterated that their sales are great and don't need any fancy gesture gimmick. Here's what you should probably take away from this. Microsoft and Motus are becoming infinitesimally more talkative about the Wiimote project, even though nobody's outright confirming it. This makes us believe that the original rumor was at least a little bit on target. [Kotaku]

Comments
that mote looks cool, but too ps3ish
@zincrox: But if they make it white to match the 360, Wii-people will go all Smash Brothers in the comments.
@Kaiser-Machead: won't they do that anyway? Last I heard from them is that anthing that reacts to motion is just ripping off the Wii, even if it was being made first.
That looks like some kinda techno-future-wakizashi
Wii win. Hooray for waggly-ness!!! Just please don't over do it Microsoft. I don't even see why they're doing this, I love my Wii and it's controls, but I also love my 360 and it's lack of motion controls. I'm glad that the Wiimote has been proven succesful but man.....too much.....
@Kaiser-Machead:
Genius! "Go all smash brothers!"
That star is well deserved for comments like that.
Well come on, what else would expect from MS? Look at EVERYTHING that has made them who they are and that EVERYTHING is/are ideas, applications and products STOLEN (copied) from others... Micro-so-gonna-copy-everything-soft
Looks like some fancy Darth Maul lightsaber...
@kOtic:
Kinda reminds me of some sort of "light katana", with the longer side being the hilt and the shorter side being a type of sheath. I don't know why, well I did just buy a new sword so that might be why.
Guys, guys... this is obviously just something for the ladies
Guys, guys... This is obviously just something for the ladies
...damn you delayed comments
@DucatiGuy: Thank you for adding to the discussion.
I think that companies shouldn't attempt at stealing rivals USP (unique selling points) as they just get a bad name in the industry and among fans. Innovate not recreate.
@DucatiGuy:
You gotta admit though... they do imitate (copy, steal) more efficiently than the competition.
In regards to the device... I just don't see Microsoft adopting a Wii-like controller for wide-spread use in their xbox games. I'll watch this development with interest though.
MS:
duplicate, don't innovate.
@DucatiGuy:
Innovation is all about taking things that already exist and improving upon them; I mean unless you drove a Model-T Ford to work this morning. If that is the case, please disregard this comment.
The rumor is probably true. Microsoft is lousy at keeping secrets. It seems like 99% of all X-Box rumors turn out to be true.
I lurv the Wiimote, but I don't think it'll catch on for the 360, simply because they already have a developed controller, I suspect most of the sales will come from bundles that include a game that uses it, then it will sit on the shelf collecting dust, much like the guncon 2 and 3 that are in a closet somewhere around my house. Also Xbox 360 doesn't rhyme with remote at all, how will it ever earn a catchy console related name? I guess you could call it the Xmote, look for the 3mote from sony in the near future.
@Kaiser-Machead: You sir I challenge to a duel!
All joking aside, I love the SSB:B but I can't stand playing it on the wiimote/nunchuck, I have to use a GC controller. "WE LIKE IKE"
ZOMG THE WII DID THAT FIRST MICROSOFT SUCKS!!!!!
Disclaimer: that was my fanboi speaking
Didn't Nintendo rip the Wii-mote/nunchuck idea off an American guy/company?
We've seen the video doing what we now call "Wii-boxing" from, what, 1999?
@liveinvt:
lol @ wakizashi
@robinandtami: Thank you for saying that.
How ironic that it's been codenamed "darwin", seeing that so many 360's have given their user's the RROD...
Microsoft: The Freedom to Innovate (TM)
Or follow Nintendo. Whichever is easier.
@robinandtami:
innovation
1. something new or different introduced
2. the act of innovating; introduction of new things or methods.
copy
1. an imitation, reproduction, or transcript of an original
@robinandtami:
Unless I'm mistaken, the Model T wasn't the first car. It is much more famous for it's mass production, which it did innovate. So even Ford copied those who came before in its product, although it did innovate the automotive factory.
@CtrlFrk: If we want to really get into it, mass production was copied from Colt who made revolvers that way (they had also copied the idea from another arms company), so really, the Model T was anything but innovative :p .
On the idea of this new controller, I can't see it happening for the 360, but maybe for MSofts next console.
Unlike steering wheels, and the Dualshock 3, to suddenly release an all new, completely different controller for an existing machine would mean that games would be made that specifically need one controller over the other. You can't suddenly tell millions of 360 owners they HAVE to buy a new controller to even play a game.
