Noted crazy person Travis Pastrana gets bored easily, and he entertains himself by doing ridiculous, usually-dangerous things at high speeds. His latest stunt? The hydrojump. It involved him "skimming his Suzuki dirtbike at 70 miles per hour for 110 feet in five-foot-deep water, and then launching off of a floating FMX ramp." It actually looks pretty fun in the video.
Remember, kids: don't try this at home, unless Red Bull throws a sponsorship your way, in which case go nuts. [Autoblog via Didn't You Hear?]

0:10 I totally saw a shark!
Sweet! Gotta get the dirt bikes outta of the shed...
there's an awesome Top Gear video on the tubes somewhere that has em doing this in a jeep, just friggin' driving across water.
@Kaiser-Machead:
in a lake
Fact: 95% of stupid decision occur within 3 feet of a Red Bull banner.
I've seen this done with snow machines, but never a dirt bike. Pretty cool.
@Darrone: Including drinking that stuff. Blech! ;)
@nutbastard: You ever catch snowmobile racing on lakes. And not in winter mind you, in summer. That's just cool.
I love that last picure of him just bailing out. Wuss.
rich kids with nothing better to do...
snowmobile. check
fourwheeler. check
jeep. check
dirtbike. didn't think it was possible
cool
@scotth0: I have actually been on a snowmobile shooting across open water. I wasn't the driver, but a passenger.
That was a day full of bad decisions. The ice on the lake had just cracked, so there was a 20 foot wide crack running down the center or the lake, so we hopped on the sled and rode down it for quiet a ways.
Then, after some one put up a redbull banner (Darrone! JK) we decided it would be fun to see if I could be pulled water skiing by a snowmobile driving on the ice. It worked, I wasn't hurt, but I look back on it, and it was not one of my brighter momments.
How the hell does that even work?
@Mondoz:
special tires.look at the ones on this jeep:
@Mondoz: serface tention and a whole lot of speed.
@nutbastard: sand paddle tires were used on the jeep, but the dirtbike just had normal knoby tires.
@Darrone: Here is video proof of that:

@Kaiser-Machead: someone is going to get munched on!
@nut@nutbastard: The jeep would have been too heavy with the tires providing very low surface area for that to work with normal tires. But a bike is light enough with lots of surface area in the two tires to keep above water because of tension and speed. A snowmobile is possible because it has more surface area than a bike.
This is definitely possible with normal bike tires.
What is this? Break.com?
i am of the belief that at no time was the water deeper than 6 inches up to the ramp... and I giggle in a condescending way at how he bailed into the aerial
@Git Em SteveDave: This year, Red Bull is doing their crazy-person-prop plane-obstacle-course-thingy on Detroit's Riverfront...I will be there.
Holy Fuck.
i'm guessing he bailed because of the loss of speed on approach to the ramp
@Maksimir: Yeah, I sure wish i could afford to junk a motorcycle every time i got a little bored.
@j4sk868: yeah, i thought everyone on gizmodo has played mario before.
and where is the EPA at on all of these cars and motorcycles and crap in lakes?
people get bored very easy here in the midwest. I've raced here and it is a blast.[en.wikipedia.org]

momentum...
That dude must have steel-lined nutsack!
It is interesting to note that the article specified the Suzuki dirtbike, which must imply that the stunt can not be performed on competing equipment. While ludicrous, this is totally true, because some kids tried this with other bikes. Their results?
Hondas: Sank like a rock. Yamahas: Exhaust noise lured in sharks. Not pretty. CanAm: Rusted instantly upon contact with the water.
The moral of this story? Suzuki, and only Suzuki, bikes allow you to defy physics. You buy anything else? You're bound to the bounds of this plane of existence.
i stand corrected - i am unable to watch videos at work, so i guess i made an ass of me and umption...
@oo0cyst0oo: In Philly we call that illegal dumping with style.
@nutbastard: Umption deserved it, but we can let you slide.
@IvyIsis: Man goes in the plane. Plane goes into the water. Sharks in the water. Our shark.
If I had superpowers, this is the kind of stuff I'd do to make money. The alternative would be robbing banks.
If you like that check out this guy with his Roo in a snowpark.

Or just attempting some crazy Evil Kenievel stunt.

@TOWken22: I was expecting him to try taking the rail at more than a few points.
Also proof it doesn't NEED to be a Red Bull Banner, any "energy drink" logo will do.
I did like the 5mph speed limit sign next to the dirt ramp in the last video.
Clearly, Suzuki is WWJD
Meh, Jesus does that on foot. :P
That was pretty cool.
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: As in going 70 miles per hour...then jumps off a ramp?
He had to use a paddle tire. I've skimmed lakes at the Oregon dunes on a dirt bike with a paddle tire. It requires a lot of horsepower and good balance. There is a limit to the distance you can travel though.
"I've skimmed lakes at the Oregon dunes on a dirt bike with a paddle tire."
Which Oregon dunes, Florence or Sand Lake? I live just down the street from the latter. Every time I send a satellite photo of this area to a friend back East, I have to explain that, no, I do NOT live in the friggin' desert!
I see a Darwin Award in this mans future.
