Philips Xenium phones are generally known for their long-life battery performances but if these photos are in fact real, then the designers are venturing into new iPhone, Diamond touchscreen territory. PC World China is saying that the upcoming Xenium x800 will have an "e2e" screen— that's an edge-to-edge touchscreen, apparently. From the photos it looks like it's got an orientation sensor, Wi-Fi, a browser, a curved design and a bevelled metal edge. Sounds a little familiar? Check out the photos yourselves.

Why is the "sound familiar" comment always saved for phones with a huge ass screen on the front and slightly rounded body? How about the other five million phone models that look almost identical to each other?
@BoinK: For serious.
@BoinK: Agreed. The clamshell was once an original concept as well. I don't hear anyone comparing new flip phones to the StarTAC much. Folds in half, screen on top, keypad on bottom -- sound familiar? I've had my iPhone since day one and I love it. Highlighting every new phone that is essentially a large touchscreen as an iPhone clone is just getting boring.
Come on though, these new touchphones from Philips and LG and HTC really do lift a lot of ideas from the iphone - not just 'touch screen, rounded body'.
Full Touchscreen, so what happens when it inevitable freezes up and you have to reset it. Touchscreens are fantastic until they stop working.
ACoBildo, a Full Touchscreen does not mean no power on/off button.
what concerns me the most is why every cell phone maker try to reproduce an iPhone-like phone?
i know that the iPhone is the most wanted phone right now but i think touch screen is not the coolest.
I am glad to see someone at least getting the look right. I hope they can get an OS that will do it justice. The people that do not want an Apple product or cannot afford one deserve as great an experience as I am having with my iphone.
Good Luck
@Benzido: So how would you design it differently?
Rounded curves are an "in" design right now, just like ultraslim clamshells (a la RAZR) were the "in" design a couple of years ago. Manufacturers will be milking the iPhone design for what it's worth, and then move on to the next best thing.
It's purdy! Maybe it will be the CDMA offering that so many have been waiting for...
@libre4vida: as a Verizon customer, CDMA is overrated! only select phone manufacturers make a line of phones for them and when they do, VZ releases them 1 or 2 years later! wtf? a good friend of mine who is a sales rep for VZ always tells me "they are testing their phones to make sure they work properly on their network." I always tell him that is a bunch of BS because their phones still have the same issues as any other carrier. I was ready to jump ship but I am waiting [patiently] for the new 4g network to become available.
Who isn't working on a Full Touchscreen Phone? Are these announcements still news?
@bms:
I only clicked on this article to say basically that.
its very pretty.
Phillips definitely has the design chops, their products are usually very sleek
looks good, depending on the firmware and features might just be actual competition for the iphone.
i love phillips products!
thats quite a slick phone, i like the design alot. might even have to upgrade, if its functional (I dont doubt it will be) and doesnt cost and arm and a leg (no doubt it will be at least half a leg cheaper than anything apple puts out)
Why bother?
i think i've seen this done somewhere... i just can't place it...
@Hvedhrungr:
I was going to say that, if you look at cell phone design trends most of them copy each other. After the razr trend there were many phones that tried to copy the same thin design. Doesn't look much like they took much design elements from that other phone besides the borderless screen, bezel looks exactly like the palm centro one.
@Evodico: Well couldn't you make an all touch screen phone WITHOUT the glossy black looks and aluminum trim? or maybe at least ANY new product that doesn't look like iShit?
And since when is 'everyone does it' a valid excuse? I'm only asking for a little more creativity.
