On last night's Colbert Report, Stephen gave advice to George Bush on how to go "completely nutball" so Sen. McCain can distance himself from the extremely unpopular president on the campaign trail. Not only did he tell Bush to wear a tinfoil jockstrap, he said the prez should buy a Zune. Really? Sure it's market share is 4%, but what about the new software? [Colbert Report]

Truthiness hurts.
If you own a Zune you are crazy.
I mean didn't you guys just say that was the best valued player on the market? Some people need an alternative to iPods... I'd say the Zune is their best option considering the price vs. features..
I do not think the Zune is the best alternative to the ipod. Why reject one software based DRM platform for another. Get a Creative... or whatever it is that people who don't get ipods get.
I gave the Zune 2 a try, the touchpad was just too hard to control to navigate through the menus choices.
Screen size is nice for the Zune and Zune "mini" though.
@Wegmans: Yeah man Zune's are great. I bought a Hide-A-Pod just so I could fit in with the cool kids.
Hey, back when the Mac had 4% of the market share, I was calling Mac owners crazy. So, this makes perfect sense to me. The market has spoken, and anyone not buying into the monopoly is just plain nutty, right?
I buy what works...
MacBook
iPhone
iPod Video
iPod Shuffle
HackIntosh
Bush is an Asshat.
If the zune worked with the Nike+ product, I would ditch the nano faster than Keanu bailed on Speed 2.
@pipper:
Pepper you can turn off the touch functionality and just use clicks, under settings/touch.
Once you get a handle on it, it's sweet to use
@Lester56: agreed.
@Lester56: I also buy what works.
Zune 80GB
HP Laptop (I will admit, it's running Linux)
The PC I built myself (and it's running Vista, and I've NEVER had a problem with it)
And yes, Bush sucks.
ya the touch is great once you get the hang of it works good :) and the zune mini is even more awesome i love that most of all
i really hope they come out with a Windows Mobile 7 sporting zune phone with a completely redesigned interface and 16gb of NAND/GPS/720p screen/wifi etc
I just copy stuff to my Sansa e280.
No muss, no fuss, no software, no bullshit.
I think everyone is miss the mark on this post. Colbert is taking over as the best late night show host. Did you see his shows from philly? Even live and in frond of a packed house he doesn't seam to miss a beat. Always sharp, always quick witted and, most importantly, always hilarious.
I might consider getting a Zune if Microsoft ported the 360 achievement concept to it. Then I might actually listen to some of the stuff I bought in junior high.
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: LISTENED TO ENTIRE 'PLEASE HAMMER DON'T HURT EM' ALBUM. 20 POINTS
@Lester56:
Where do you buy a "Bush is an asshat?"
@Johnny Chimpo:
"Colbert is taking over as the best late night show host"
Didn't that happen like 2 years ago? ;-)
@strider_mt2k:
Yeah I had an E260 for awhile. Unfortunately the E200s suffer from a poor quality headphone jack. You can permanently damage it just by pulling out the headphones.
I got my Zune a few months ago and I love it. I use it mainly for podcasts and it seems like the Zune was built for podcasts. I really like the software too. My only complaint is that if I download a podcast from a site, rather than Zune or iTunes, the zune software will almost always recognize it as a song. The reason thats a problem is that when you turn off your Zune while playing a podcast(paused or not) it will remember where you left off when you turn it back on. It won't do that with songs.
Creative Zen. Recent purchase.
I had an Ipod for years, when it died, I bought a Zune 30GB on Woot for $100. Been very happy with it, and recently added a Zen Stone 2GB ($27) for toting around.
I buy what's cheap yet still works.
@Lester56:
Yup my stuff works
HP media center
30g Zune
Ipod Shuffle
LG cheap phone
Black/Red Chuck Taylors
Levis 527
91 Infiniti G20
Bush is an ass hat, but it doesn't add relevance to your comment.
Memorex Sport 512MB with SD card slot MP3 player for jogging. I think it was $40 and came with the arm band.
iPhone for the car and for phoning.
LOL... tells you the kind of of product the Zune is to the general public. It's nothing special really. Just another MS me too product. Look at the new update. Just basically copying Apple again.
Who'se going to explain to McCain what this whole Zune - iPod this is about? He might still be using 8 track.
I got my 8 year old a Zune for Christmas. It's awesome. Seriously. He loves it.
@Lester56:
Oh cool, we're listing our inventory of stuff that works!?
iMac
Powermac G5
Acura Integra GSR (sigh, I guess I am an Asian sterotype, but I just love it)
PS3
Sony Bravia 46"
sigh, fanboys
@jwrose:
Yesterday's update added a feature similar to achievements called "badges."
And as for stuff that works, I've got a whole collection too:
Dell Dimension 9100 Tricked out and now running Vista Home Premium (never had a problem with XP, btw)
iPod Nano (orig) 4 GB
Apple ][+ with 16k add-on card and dual disk drives (I fire it up every year on my birthday and play some Ultima ][, just to make sure it works, and because I'm cool)
Xbox360
Nintendo Wii
Nintendo DS
Canon 5D
Fujitsu Lifebook P7010D
Love me some internets!
wow funny.... i wonder how much steve jobs payed him for that one lol
It is so revealing that people have to qualify Vista with 'never had a problem, btw'.
On my 4-1/2 year old PowerMac G5, I use OS-X Leopard (never had a problem, btw).
lol, man Cobert is hilarious. I'll bet Cobert just doubled the awareness of the Zune in this segment. Most of my family members own or have owned an iPod, but have never even heard of the Zune. Microsoft is pretty bad at marketing this thing, and maybe they would sell more if they could increase awareness so that people at least knew there were other options besides the iPod.
Even funnier is how Microsoft and Apple fanboys reverse roles when switching from the PC vs. Mac to the iPod vs. Zune debate.
Market share, price, etc. BLAH BLAH BLAH. Buy what you like and what works for you. No need to tell someone else what is best for them.
Give me a Zen Vision or an Archos 605 any day over an ipod or zune.
Yesterday after seeing that Microsoft will soon be launching the Zune in Canada, my best friend announced that he wanted one.
I could only ask "Why?".
His response:
Mission accomplished, I suppose.
I can't be too judgmental, being the proud owner of an HD-DVD player and collection. I think those discs are actually turning square on the shelf.
Im still waiting for the Psystar Open MP3 player.
translucent brown... I think iPod won this battle. Maybe next format Microsoft.
Sony had me on the CD players and now Apple has me on the DAPS. I don't see what could happen next but we'll see won't we.
I haven't met one person who actually owns a ZUNE.
i dont find a problem with the zune, its just an underdog thats all, and everyone loves kicking things when theyre down.
i know some people who do own a zune and they absolutely love it, same with people who have ipods. so.. who really cares?
Zune ownership does mean you're crazy though. I did some r...
Hmm, I know more people who own Zunes than ipods (and they love their Zune, me included) and I've only see 1 iphone in the wild, go figure.
Just you Zune haters wait.... When they get games you all will be dumping your ipods and joining the zune revolution!!!!
@xint:
do you actually meet any people at all.
Once not so proud owner of a Zune here... It was OK but I often had skipping and freezing and all sorts of unlisted features. Finally made the jump to all-too-predictable iPod 80 but it works and much better so I'm happy I guess... Other stuff that works:
Custom built 3 year old PC running XP - sex
4+ year old Nokia 6230 with MP3, video, picture recording, still rocks hard
Latest MBP - base model, using it now
Sexbox 360 waiting to have GTA IV inserted into it after my finals are all over
ARCHOS 605 crushes teh Zune lol.
I would gladly take one over a Zune or iPod Touch any day.
@keyjey:
I have actually never seen a Zune in the wild before either, and I have met hundreds of thousands of people. When your market share is 4%, things like this happen.
not that i like everything steve jobs says, but... he did raise a good question during an interview. "Do you even know anyone who owns a zune?" When i thought about, it's true, i don't know anyone who owns one.
@justinpe: "Even funnier is how Microsoft and Apple fanboys reverse roles when switching from the PC vs. Mac to the iPod vs. Zune debate."
No kidding. I've thought that was funny myself. It's cool to be in the minority for Macs but not for Zunes?
Whatever. I'm so happy with my Sansa e280 I can't imagine switching to either. I probably paid half the price for either of their 8gb models and no DRM.
The Microsoft/Toshiba Zune, is a big improvement, and would have outsold the G1 or G2 iPod Easily, But 10 min with the iPod Touch, and it feels like some old soviet music Device From The Cold War, and Now My Goodies
PS3 With 200gb 7200 Hitachi Drive
Wii 2gb SD Card
Toshiba Tivo 2 DVD Recorder 160gb Drive
Mac book 320gb Drive
Mac Pro 4 1TB Drives, 4gb Ram Dual Burners,
Samsung 40" LCD 1080p
and i drive a Toyota, because i like things that just work
Every days a holiday.
@Camperton: No, please don't. I have a Creative Zen Vision:M, and like it enough, but due to steadily crippling certain features, absolutely terrible bundled software and a propensity to crash fairly often, I really can no longer recommend Creative's PMPs.
The Zune 2 looks great, has a great interface, more features and a lower price than a comparable iPod. It will likely be my next media player, since the majority of my work is done in Windows anyways.
I didnt realize iPods and Zunes had DRM. I always thought it was the files on it that did. You should get rid of your macs and pcs since they are full of DRM.
