A German inventor has developed a paint called AR 1 that can hide a vehicle from radar, and most importantly, "all militarily relevant frequencies." How it works is unclear, though one test researcher proposes it's either by reflecting radar waves in a pattern so they cancel one another out, or by utilizing microscopic magnets to absorb radar radiation. And no, it won't get you out of speeding tickets.
The inventor's story is an interesting one, involving thousands of hours of lab trial and error, as well as international military interest in his product...that far outshined the response from his own country's military.
But apparently the most promising and equitable use for such a paint could be civilian. Airport towers and buildings have a long history of interfering with flight control radars. And to simply make them disappear would be quite useful—as opposed to calling hangar 12 in for a landing or something. [Spiegel Online via NewLaunches][image]

And if I were to paint a sports car with this stuff, will it beat the radar gun?
I'd like to see the gun read "LOL ERROR n00b"
@Kaiser-Machead: Yeah - or PWNED!!!!
radar? seriously...who uses radar anymore. This is so 20th century.
It will not deflect laser-guided ammunitions.
@WMyers:
last i heard the Apache wasnt outdated yet...
[www.lockheedmartin.com]
@WMyers: What do they use on your planet?
Actually, the problem airports have with tall buildings is their radar shadow, not their signature. I think it might actually be more dangerous to use this paint, as there will be a shadow still, but you will not see the building making the shadow and not know for sure where the shadow's edges are.
@WMyers: Back in my day, we used to scream out in the dark to listen for echoes. Of course, the bats were better at this, but sometimes we got lucky.
@DustyButt: It is, it just hasn't been replaced. The Comanche solved dozens of major problems with the Apache, including the exposed rear rotors that were prone to debris.
@Darrone:
I think you were talking to me, and the only thing the Comanche made obsolete was some museum's last paper weight. the Comanche had a shielded tail, correct. But those rotor blades are still prone to erosion. the only tail that isnt is NOTAR. Also, please enlighten me as to what other "Major" issues the Apache has. Im sure the countries that are still buying them would love your input.
Is it a good idea to make tall buildings invisible to radar?

"Heh Sarge, should we really go across the plain in full view of the radar seeking missiles?
Yes sonny boy - we have our new coat of paint."
Brilliant.
The only requirement is that you have to ride the tank naked.
@Kaiser-Machead: Well you got off lucky. I used to feel my way through until I got slapped with sexual harrasment. It was something about trying to read a shirt...
good luck with that wilhelm - but I can still see you WITH MY EYES!
@beetlebailey: Thanks for catching that! grabbed the wrong name...
Countries are still buying migs, and Russian diesel submarines, that doesn't mean they aren't obsolete by US standards. hell, the Kalashnikov is still the most popular gun in the world! Some are decades old! The fact is, its out-dated, but provided it functions, someone will always use it.
If you don't know how it works, how can you be so sure that it won't get me out of a speeding ticket?
@Darrone:
@beetlebailey:
So if radar is old tech and some countries still use old tech for their military; what is the likelyhood that a country in posession of radar invisible paint will be going to war with one still using radar?
Extra points for showing your work :)
@Kaiser-Machead: I'd like to know if it will beat the radar gun as well, because if the paint is absorbing the signal, it won't send the proper info back. A cop with no proof is very easy to beat, a cop who can't provide accurate details of the scene is even easier to beat.
@ripfire4: I've used that line before, it's not bad.
@Darrone:
it would be outdated if it were not constantly upgraded in spaced integrals. the original apache may be outdated but the airframe is in constant improvement. @draconis2941:
i wouldnt call radar " old tech" thats like saying electricity is old tech. your question is still making me wonder. when i get home from work ill have to look into that.
@Darrone: I flew helos in the Army... No it didn't.
Where's the Commanche now??? OH! Canceled.
No helicopter is immune to dopplar radar.
