Flying an R/C plane in the darkness of night can be a difficult proposition. That is, until you add 150 LED lights to the hollows of the plane's fuselage and wings. The creator tells us the brightest model consumes 75W of lighting electricity and is "painfully bright at night." Irreversible cornea damage has never been so much fun! To see a video of the plane in-flight, hit the jump.
Make sure to watch the second half of the clip to catch a pretty remarkable reflection as the plane skims over the water. [CastleCreations]

Oooohhhhh,... Ahhhhhhhhh....
Oh man I'm flashing back the trails THE TRAILS!!
Reminds me of Tron.
Christmas plane!
Let's guess how many idiots mistake this for a UFO. I say the entire population of the south!
That's pretty cool. I fly 3D foamies in my front yard, and was going to put a few LED's on mine to help flying at dusk....but not this many....
Clearly photoshopped.
And those frogs!! Used to get those outside my window when I was growing up. Many sleepless nights were caused by that INFERNAL RACKET!!
Make a ufo shaped plane ! " officer, officer.. they've arrived !". Great stuff.
It helps to live in Olathe, Kansas, so that you can be sure you aren't going to hit any non-illuminated trees, etc.
Does Ashton Kutcher have one? If so, count me in.
does not pull 75W for LEDs....
@Y2KGTP: there are 2W LEDs, but I've only ever seen them when used for super bright flashlights and what-not.
how the hell do you land this?
that looks like it would be addictive to fly that thing at night.
Marge: "There's something about flying a kite at night that is so unwholesome."
Bart: "Hello, Mother dear."
So gorgeous. And a good pilot at that!
@bandit: Actually Olathe, is a pretty developed suburb of Kansas City (the 29th largest MSA in the US).
BTW, I'm starting to wonder if is it a genetic defect that some of you have to make yourself feel better by bagging on the south and mid-west?
Fly this over the Midwest and watch how many UFO sighting reports will come in.
@ workingonyourinvoice
Clearly photoshopped???? You do realize this is VIDEO right?
Have you ever seen an RC plane? This is not altered, it is just a plain video of someone goofy lighted rc plane. Granted it does go into slow-mo at one point to show how close it comes to the water.
@kir: We kidd because we care, y'all :)
@pcs800: Seriously, I know the guy that photoshopped it. He made $50 for it too.
I'd guess maybe 7.5W max. Are you sure you got the decinmal place in the correct place? You'd have to carry lots of heavy batteries for 75W.
"Hey where did it go?"
"It was too dark to see those trees".
This thing could drive UFO enthusiasts up a wall.
@N@tedog:
Hot dawg paw! I done seen a dang U-F-O! Call Amerika'z Most Wonted and that dang place in Los Vegas Navada!! We gone be RICH!
This is cool though.
Yeah, I don't see it using up 2w of power per LED... It might draw 7.5w of power, but not 75w. The plane would melt under all that energy.
That's cool man. Makes me want to fire up a doobie and relax while I watch this cool video and listen to that relaxing music.
@FinalValgas: That makes me think you done taken classes of "Southernese". Funniest post I've seen in a while.
Ummmm... 75 watts from 150 LEDs is 1/2 watt per LED, not 2 watts per LED. And yes, that is not only possible, but easily done.
Batteries are Lithium Polymer
Olathe Kansas is the nutcrack of the midwest
true story
@kir: Olathe is the home of Castle Creations, who is one of the top manufacturers of ESC's, motors, and receivers for the RC industry.
I'm not sure of CC's connection with the 3D plane, but I guarantee the label on the upper wing surface is "Thunderbird" representing their T-bird line of ESC's.
The second plane is a FunJet by Multiplex...
They make good stuff, so keep the bagging on Olathe down.
@workingonyourinvoice:
Comment on LED Plane Is More Like An R/C Comet Not photoshopped. The June issue of FLY R/C magazine has the article about this exact plane and how the guy did it. It is a new thing in R/C flying that is really starting to get big. More people are doing this to their planes. Over the Edge 540
@Zander:
Southern Floridian. not really really the south but some of us are reallll country.
