Before Clayface came out, the marketing was intentional as to not show you Matt Hagen’s final form. If you saw him Creature Commandos, that didn’t matter, because the trailers hyped up what his body was doing to him instead of what he’d be.
In the film proper, we now know it’s because his actual monster form doesn’t appear until the very end. And now that it’s in theaters and you’ve probably seen it through grainy photos, studio KM Effects (recently of Supergirl and Neuromancer) is free to show off the suit that makes up Matt’s villainous alter ego. In now-deleted Instagram posts, creative director Kristyan Mallett said the studio did “prosthetic blood effects, fake dummies, props and vfx lighting models” for the film.

That includes the suit, which they made to help the VFX team figure out the lighting and framing when Matt finally took evil shape. It took about two weeks to make the costume in the video above, and “all hands were on deck for this one,” said Mallett. According to him, all the Clayface parts had to be sculpted as individual pieces before they could be fabricated to fit together. A short timeframe kept the team from coring out the suit during its moulding process. Instead, they “cut out excess foam from the inside” that created cavities for performer Spencer Wilding to move around more easily.

Separately, freelance artist Francesco Fabiani showed off the test and final sculpts for Clayface’s head. Each time, it took him a couple days to make the sculpts, and called it “an honour and pleasure to sculpt the Creature suit head of one of my favourite childhood comic book characters and toys.” Before deleting his posts, Mallett said he’d share more in the future, so effects lovers can look forward to that.
