Forget touchscreen, solar powered or even self-destructing coffee tables... Kyle Downes has modded the coffee table into its best version ever: a retro-tastic NES controller. Just look at the sleek lines, the high quality finish and classy glass top. And then giggle at the fact that it actually works. Don't believe it? Check out the video after the gallery.
Kyle spent months putting this together, starting with a scanned image of his original NES control. This he then simply scaled up, carefully crafting each piece out of MDF and hacking his own wiring onto a broken old controller board. The glass top was the final touch, to protect those giant buttons, and inside there's plenty of storage. I guess if you're up for some giant 8-bit game-controlling action you'd probably need someone else on hand.
So, it's not exactly the highest of tech, but, like all the best ideas, it's a simple one. And I love it. [UltraAwesome via Tech Digest]

that girl is super cute
WANT.
He should have built the console into the table. Hide the external wires inside. With a couple of mods, like moving the console inside the table, some racks to hold spare games (or switching the console to an emulator), this could be a fun and possibly marketable idea.
It's been done and, as good as it is, it doesn't really fit in with decor belonging to anyone over 35 years old. At least not in the over 35 and not living in their parents' rec room crowd.
Oh WOW, very nicely done. It really does look like a bigger version of the original one.
Hmm... I'd buy it. If I had any space for it, of course.
Next: Atary joystick doubles as pole dancing... pole.
It's kind of a chest too... a treasure chest.
I'd buy, absolutely. It would fit in my nicely in my family room. And the added bonus of no painful controller grooves in my fingers after a Punch Out fest is the icing on the cake.
Could you imagine playing Track & Field with this thing!
Finally, something on Giz that lights my fire.
Nice. I always wanted to transfer my carpal to my shoulders.
This is sweet.... but I would think it presents a bit of a problem pressing A+B at once, or pressing diagonal directions.
@Keebler: Or two players.
imagine playing the stairs level of ghostbusters...
It's very cute trying to play 'two-players'. May be good for couples.
Mod that thing into your home security system??? Konami code FTW!
I'd buy one and know a good 20 people who would absolutely want one, given there's no price gouging.
@GOKOR: Considering the size of that, cost of materials alone is probably in the hundreds and then the time to put one together? Even paying the guy minimum wage, you'd probably think it was price gouging.
Today's my birthday and I take back all the things I asked for. I WANT THIS TABLE!!!!
Yknow, even if it wasn't functional, I'd still buy this.
i could see my friends getting drunk and in a rage of the moment they will try playing old school mario and punch their firsts through the glass and onto the giant buttons....i will then freak out as they have huge shards of glass in their hands and fists...this could be so bad!!!
@Margatron: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Awesome!
[www.g4tv.com]
This was done on G4 TV a while ago follow the link for videos and a PDF schematic of the table.
@Margatron: Happy Birthday! :-)
Well this Coffee Table and the Han Solo Carbonite Desk and I think "Toys Я Us" was right - I don't want to grow up!
@Darascon: could you see someone trying to plug in the Konami Code in the allotted time on that thing?
.
@letgomyeggo: Well, like they say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder".
I want it! I WANT IT! Gimme gimme gimme!
The Detail is Amazing, nice job Nintendo controller owner dude!
Faslane
I remember when I had an NES clone and we would play Contra. The game only gave you 3 lives, but you could get 33 lives if you pressed A and then B repeatedly and rapidly at the startup screen. Just imagine doing that on this coffee table!
Imagine the size of the blisters you'd get after playing that for like 30 hours straight!
@Margatron: happy b-day
Yeah, really impressed by the craftsmanship. I would prolly put the console inside, but I'm nit picking. Super cute girl ;)
That's the best giant NES pad I've seen.. well proportioned and very detailed, cool button mechanisms too. Bravo!
Best. Coffee Table. Ever.
I don't even care if its functional or not... I want it, RIGHT NOW. That would go perfect in my place.
Oh and throw in the girl too...She'd go perfect in my bed... Err uh, I mean my place as well. Or does that cost extra?
@Keebler: It's made out of MDF, I hope someone doesn't pay in the hundreds for materials.
THAT IS AMAZING...Truly worth a ridiculous response like:
ZOMGWTFBBQAWESOME!!!!!!!!
<3
HAH!! Sweet!!
Now imagine a Wii remote this size! ROFL!
And ditto on the super-cute girl! YUM!
Perfect for when our giant alien friends come out of their hiding place.
He could have fit not only the console, but the projector and the storage for the screen in there. Had a power strip inside and only have one plug comming out (maybe even some other controllers for a little multiplayer)
That's awesome. Now can you build me a giant SNES controller?
Just add video output with some integrated games, and forget about the Wii.
Didn't Attack of the show have something like this a year and a half ago?
does the girl come with the controller at half price?
oh and build me a giant psp while ur at that :P
Where's the gargantuous pistol for Duck Hunt???
