The US military doesn't often see the outlandishness of an idea so much of a problem as a challenge. It's experimented with telepathic ray guns and Impulse Swimmer guns, why not just make the soldier himself the weapon?
The Men Who Stare at Goats is the tale of a reporter, Bob Wilton (played by Ewan McGregor), out to prove his manhood to himself and his cheating wife (who left him for his one-armed boss). Apparently running to Kuwait to attempt a crossing into Iraq during Operation: Desert Storm was the best of his ideas. In Kuwait, he meets a former army operative, Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who proceeds to take him into Iraq where many a heartwarming kidnappings, shootings, and various fights ensue until the eventual resolution is brought about by widespread psychedelic drug use. Also, a few goats die.
The Men Who Stare at Goats stars Ewan McGregor, George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey—an all-star cast for a rather quietly-performing film. However, the premise is sublime and the acting is outstanding, albeit a bit slapstick at points, with that same sort of quirky and surreal humor as, say, The Big Lebowski. [iTunes - Amazon]
