Windows Phone 8 Devices Will Get OTA Updates and 18 Months of Firmware Support

Well, here’s some cold comfort to Windows Phone 7.5 users and an iron-clad promise to future Windows Phone 8 buyers; Microsoft has just announced that all WP8 updates will be over the air from now on (so you won’t have to plug your device into your computer), and that all future Windows Phone 8 devices will be supported for at least 18 months after they’re released.

That won’t do much for Lumia owners, whose Windows Phone journey will end with a WP 7.8 update later this year that brings that fancy new start screen to older devices. But it’s a nice bit of future-proof assurance, and a clean way to avoid the fragmentation nightmares of, say, I dunno, Android, maybe?
