Some songs just fit some weather, and with a big ol’ snow storm trudging its way across the east coast, there’s no better time to listen to some Weakerthans. Specifically “Our Retired Explorer” which is, fittingly, about the Antarctic.

Off the (fantastic) 2003 album Reconstruction Site, “Our Retired Explorer (Dines with Michel Foucault in Paris, 1961)” is one of the many Weakerthan’s songs that refers to or revolves around the recurring theme of Antarctic exploration. It even throws at least one passing reference to the “Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration” that history buffs might get a kick out of. For the rest of is, it’s just a light, catchy tune that makes you appreciate the great comforts of being able to sit inside a heated structure when crystalline flakes of water are falling from the sky outside.
