This afternoon, ConEd issued a statement pleading with New Yorkers to use less energy—and thus prevent brownouts. Why? Because today at 2pm, the company broke its official energy usage record.

According to ConEd, New Yorkers expended 13,214 megawatts of power at once to keep their precious cronuts cool this afternoon, beating the old record by 25 megawatts. That number was set on July 22, 2011, during another blistering heatwave, when use peaked at 13,189 megawatts. [Gothamist]
