Book carving artist Guy Laramée bids farewell to the printed version of Encyclopedia Britannica with Adieu, a serene mountain sculpture made from a 24-volume set.
We have featured Laramée’s book carvings before, but Adieu is a particularly interesting work given that the Encyclopedia Britannica went out of print in 2012, becoming an online-only reference. It fits with one of Laramée’s favorite themes, the erosion of culture, in which “Cultures emerge, become obsolete, and are replaced by new ones.” On his artist’s statement, he says:

So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. They erode a bit more and they become hills. Then they flatten and become fields where apparently nothing is happening. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS. Fogs and clouds erase everything we know, everything we think we are.
