Buying a second-hand iPhone can be a gamble, with the chances of ending up with a locked device relatively high. Now, Apple has launched an iCloud tool that lets you check if the iPhone in question is legit.

The service lets owners and future owners check the activation lock status of an iPhone. Armed with either the IMEI or serial number of the device in question, owners can find out how to disable any activation locks before they sell and buyers can remove the previous account (with a little help from the seller). Crucially, buyers will be able to tell straight away if the phone is stolen, locked or otherwise suspect. Which is useful. [Apple via Engadget]
