Backrooms has been one of 2026’s biggest movies, and it understandably spawned sequel chatter for a while now. Whatever that film ends up being, it seems Kane Parsons will be back in the director’s chair.
That’s according to horror outlet Dread Central, which alleged on Sunday that the 21-year-old filmmaker has officially signed on. Earlier this summer, there was some back-and-forth over what he’d do next: A24 wants him for both this and and a separate original project, while Warner Bros. and Universal each courted him to make movies with them. Parsons owns the Backrooms IP, so he theoretically could’ve gone to any studio he wanted for his next project.
But with A24 he shall apparently remain, at least for his sophomore effort. There’ve been some stumbling blocks, but it’s otherwise been a pretty good relationship between the two: Backrooms opened strong and kept on making money, longer than anyone could’ve expected. It’s made $394.1 million worldwide, got re-released in theaters with extra footage, and only recently landed on HBO Max.
Dread Central said A24’s official announcement for Parsons will be “imminent.” io9 has reached out to A24 to confirm the outlet’s reporting, and will update if a comment is given.
