DefenseTech’s Noah Shachtman profiles the Army’s ‘Future Force Warrior’ (FFW) program which aims to create a lightweight, high-tech, yet affordable and practical system of integrated body armor that addresses the changing roles and environments of America’s fighters. More than just improved body armor (although that’s changing a lot, getting both lighter and cooler to wear), the FFW systems aim to interface much of the commonly used equipment such as night vision and radios into ‘e-textile’ that will weave power and data wires into the fabric itself. Good stuff, and much more practical than the “Power Ranger-motocross-ninja thing” sometimes offered up by the Defense Department as ‘the future soldier.’
