Love or hate the fallout from the government’s Homeland Security projects, there’s at least one positive outcome we can all agree on: it’s putting way more robots into our lives. While most are mechanoid munchkins that motor on treads and wheels, there’s more than a few that are showing up to patrol the waters of our harbors and oceans, like the 8-pound ROV called VideoRay (pictured) that Norfolk, Virginia police have been using to crawl through the murky and sometimes dangerous waters of the Elizabeth River. And the Navy’s getting in on the game, too, with robotic drones (in military pink, even!) like the Seaglider long-range scanner which recently spent a record 5 months in the sea, powered by shifting changes in buoyancy or the diesel-powered auto-robotic Sea Fox patrol boat that is intended to protect Navy assets by keeping a vigilant eye out for enemy attack with its electronic camera spyglass. We’ll liberate that freedom-hating Atlantean fishman kingdom yet.
