In March, the io9 book club read Jeff VanderMeer's Annihilation. Today, from noon - 1:00 pm (PDT), VanderMeer will be joining us to answer your questions about Annihilation, weird fiction, and anything else!
Just start asking your questions in the comments section now, and VanderMeer will answer as many as he can this afternoon. Please be polite!
Want to find out more about the io9 book club? You can check out our past meetings here. This month, we're reading Kate Atkinson's Life After Life. We'll meet on May 6 to discuss it!
I was recently talking to a friend about — for lack of a better term — the scientification of fantasy. We're seeing a lot of stories these days where fantasy elements are explained using science. I think Annihilation is an example of a story where this is happening, and it's done incredibly well.
I'm curious about whether you think bringing science into fantasy is a form of de-mystification? Or does it actually serve to make science itself more magical? And what does that imply about what we want out of our fantastical/weird storytelling in the 'teens?
