Turns out even Marvel isn’t bold enough to sell tickets for a movie that doesn’t have a trailer yet. The first Avengers: Doomsday trailer surprise-dropped this morning, coinciding with tickets for the film going on sale. It’s a much more logical move than saving the trailer for Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, but it does beg the question: if the Doomsday trailer isn’t going to be the centerpiece of Marvel’s presentation, what else does the studio have in store for us?

In the trailer, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) seems to be having a hell of a time convincing all the various heroic and semi-heroic factions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to work together. Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) squares up to Gambit (Channing Tatum), Mystique (Rebecca Romijn) takes on Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), and a coterie of Wakandans seems to be ready to face off against Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía).
Presumably, all these characters should be working together, not against each other, and Thor’s speech is meant to make them understand that the threat they’re up against is one of cosmic proportions, which he says will take “a miracle” to stop. We see teases of Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) throughout the trailer—there’s even a snippet of a fight between him and Thor—but, interestingly, Thor doesn’t specifically name the danger they’re facing. The trailer keeps things just ambiguous enough to make us uncertain of what Doom’s role in all of this is.
Elsewhere, we see Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), somehow back in his young(ish) body, Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) sharing a quiet but intense moment together, and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) looking contemplative.
