The CEO of Best Buy just said the iPad is cannibalizing 50% of the company's laptop sales, the Wall Street Journal reports.

When consumers walk into Best Buy now, they don't look at or want laptops, instead they're drawn to the iPad. "People are willing to disproportionately spend for these devices because they are becoming so important to their lives," says CEO Brian Dun.

Bad news for Dell, HP, Acer, and Microsoft.

DISCUSSION

The iPad is not a laptop replacement — however most of the people buying a laptop don't really *need* a laptop. They're buying it because it does the basic things that, with a few minor exceptions, the iPad does just as well.

I still wonder if Apple is really going to end up making money off iPads if cut into their own laptop sales. After all, Apple's profit on one of their laptops is probably more than the entire cost of an iPad. They sell those things at way, way, way over cost.

I suppose it's closer to the console model. They may make less on the hardware sale, but perhaps over the product lifetime they'll make it up on their 30% cut of Software sales.
