Can Anyone Account for Alex's Misbehaving iTunes Movie Playback?

Gizmodo reader Alex W. wrote in with another bugging-out MacBook question, this time concerning iTunes and its (in)ability to play movies downloaded in HD/SD. Hive mind, can we help him?

Alex writes:

I was wondering if you were aware of problems with iTunes (seemingly when the new retina displays were released). In the past few days iTunes doesn't seem to want to play movies that are downloaded in HD/SD version. It for some reason seems to only pick up that HD is present (says something about the screen resolution not being supported). I can find the exact terminology for you if needed. Just for reference, the stats for my computer are below.

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2

Processor Name: Intel Core i7

Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 8 GB
