A tiny robot comes to life, and immediately is full of curiosity about the world, in our exclusive excerpt from the graphic novel Little Robot by Ben Hatke, creator of Zita the Spacegirl. But maybe not surprisingly, the robot’s explorations start with a cat that gets maybe too friendly.

Here’s the official description for Little Robot, which is out Sept. 1:

When a little girl finds an adorable robot in the woods, she presses a button and accidentally activates him for the first time. Now, she finally has a friend. But the big, bad robots are coming to collect thelittle guy for nefarious purposes, and it’s all up to a five-year-old armed only with a wrench and a fierce loyalty to her mechanical friend to save the day!

Ben Hatke is the author of the New York Times bestselling Zita the Spacegirl trilogy as well as the picture book Julia’s House for Lost Creatures. In addition to writing and drawing comics, he also paints in the naturalist tradition and, occasionally, performs one-man fire shows. Hatke lives and works in the Shenandoah Valley with his wife and their boisterous pack of daughters. Little Robot, his latest graphic novel, will be in stores in September.
