Over at Brain Pickings, Maria Popova has assembled a great little preview of Mapping Manhattan, a newly published collection of 75 hand-drawn maps, submitted by strangers and famous New Yorkers alike to cartographic curator Becky Cooper. One of our favorites of the bunch is this sketch from astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who has used his canvass to reproduce the famed "Manhattan Solstice."
You may know it as Manhattanhenge – NYC's own, personal celestial alignment, during which the setting sun nestles itself betwixt the borough's east/west streets. Those who will be in NYC this year can witness it for themselves on: May 28th and July 13th (see here for details on time/location).
