Just when you thought this couldn't get more horrifying and appalling. James Holmes, the 24-year-old shooter currently in custody for killing 12 people at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, allegedly modeled himself after the Batman villain, the Joker. ABC News has confirmed this information with two federal law enforcement officers.

NYPD police commissioner Ray Kelly explained to reporters that Holmes told authorities after the shooting that he "was The Joker." Kelly elaborated that the suspect had dyed his hair red. 12 people are confirmed dead, and 59 wounded. Our hearts go out to the victims' families and loved ones.

UPDATE CNN confirms:

Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes had colored his hair red and told police that he was "the Joker," a federal law enforcement source with detailed knowledge of the investigation told CNN's Susan Candiotti.

UPDATE: Via Deadline, Christopher Nolan's heartfelt statement says everything we could want to say on this tragic matter:

Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.
