Ramez Naam is a software engineer who spent years at Microsoft working on Explorer, Outlook, and Bing. Then he became fascinated by biotechnology and authored a non-fiction book called More Than Human: Embracing the Promise of Biological Enhancement. And now he’s turned to science fiction. He’s sold two books, Nexus and its sequel Crux, to Angry Robot Books.

Here’s a plot synopsis:

In the near future, the nano-drug Nexus can link mind to mind. There are some who want to improve it. There are some who want to eradicate it. And there are others who just want to exploit it. When a young scientist is caught improving Nexus, he’s thrust over his head into a world of danger and international espionage, with far more at stake than anyone realizes.

Sign me up! I’ve seen Naam speak at conferences about his work, and he’s an engaging, intelligent guy — I can easily see him spinning a kickass science fiction tale. Nexus hits in January 2012, with Crux following later in the year.
