CNet reviews the Cowon iAudio M3, the hard disk-based player that manages to be smaller than the iPod, albeit by moving the display and controls to an in-line module. It that's not the sort of thing that bothers you, though (and if you haven't had a portable player with an in-line remote before, I think it's something you'll find you use more often than you'd think), the M3 offers solid alternative to other hard disk players, with good battery life (around 15 hours), support of OGG/WMA/MP3 (although no DRM variants), line-in analog recording, and an built-in FM tuner. The in-line remote has a decent screen, too, with a six-line, backlit display. Although it isn't in many stores yet, the price could be better. Minidisc AU has it for $599AUD, which breaks down to a little over $400USD for a 20GB player—that's more expensive than the iPod, the epitome of overpriced players.
