There are many things the French do well — berets, smoking, rich foods, dramatic malaise — but making a pseudo-schlocky homage to cheesy ’80s scifi-horror flicks doesn’t seem to be one of them.
The best way to describe the mode of filmmaking hinted at here is “blender”: toss in some Weird Science, Night of the Comet, every other slasher movie; splash with a hint of She’s All That; finish it off with a soupcon of Short Circuit; then serve to an audience you’re hoping doesn’t know any better.
Hey, it’d be great if the finished product could summon the nostalgia they’re clearly going for. But, man, it doesn’t look like it.
