It’s actually surprising that it has taken Disney this long to think about adding The Little Mermaid to its giant list of live-action adaptations.
According to Deadline, Disney’s just heard a “new take” on the idea, and is deciding whether it likes it enough to proceed. It has to be a really good version of this, honestly, since Universal is also already making a live-action version of the Hans Christian Andersen story, starring Chloe Grace Moretz. And brand new MVP studios is making A Little Mermaid (note the “a” instead of a “the”) with Shirley MacLaine.
Even as a latecomer to the battle of the mermaids, there is every chance that Disney will crush all competition. It’s already pretty much proved to have the better Jungle Book—and it’s going to be even harder to beat a good version of its already classic take on The Little Mermaid.
