Some may see despair when they look upon a double amputee in a wheelchair, but Spanish surgeon Pedro Cavadas saw an opportunity.

Cavadas and a team of doctors at La Fe hospital in Valencia performed the world’s first double leg transplant on this unidentified amputee. Cavadas has an excellent track record. He’s known world-wide for performing Spain’s first double arm transplant in 2008 and its first face transplant in 2009.

Let’s hope this latest surgery is successful as this is the man’s only chance to walk again. He lost both legs above the knee after an accident and current prosthetic technology cannot replace these limbs. [Ottawa Citizen via Ubergizmo; Shutterstock/ Rhonda R]
