IM Global Television has made a deal to turn The Hike, the 2016 fantasy novel by writer and famous bad shirt haver Drew Magary (who, full disclosure, writes for our sister site Deadspin), into a TV show.
David S. Goyer (Batman v. Superman) will be producing the show and Magary will be writing the script. If you haven’t read The Hike, it’s about a man who goes on a walk in the woods only to find himself lost on a surreal path stewn with surreal dangers, including demons, an absurdly luxurious hovercraft, giant grasshoppers, a 16th-century Spanish explorer, and more. There’s also a talking crab.
This isn’t Magary’s first dance with the joy that is the endless Hollywood development cycle; his other fiction book, The Postmortal, had its film rights bought by Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson in 2013. However, we’d love to see Magary’s The Hike on the small screen, if only of because we desperately want talking crab casting gossip.
“Obviously, it’s great fucking news but I’m also fully aware that getting ANYTHING made for real is a longshot,” said Magary when we asked him for comment, literally by IMing him. “So I’m gonna have to work my ass off to make sure it’s good enough for someone to pick up. I’ve also adapted my own work as a pilot before and it didn’t get made, but I hope that experience helps me on this one.
“Also, I hope it runs forever and makes me billions so I can move all of us to Elysium.”
