Even Billie Piper Doesn’t Seem to Know What’s Up with ‘Doctor Who’

That doesn't mean people will stop asking the once (and future?) Rose Tyler about the beloved but currently in flux sci-fi series.

The only thing we know right now about the future of Doctor Who is that anyone and everyone involved in its past will be asked to weigh in on it. The latest to be put on the spot is Billie Piper, who appeared as Rose Tyler (or someone who looks like her) when Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor got through regenerating.

Now, obviously, Piper isn’t a Doctor Who writer or producer. So it’s not surprising that she wouldn’t know too much about what’s coming for the show in its current time of uncertainty. But you have to assume that when she agreed to appear in “The Reality War,” she had some scrap of information about what she was doing there—what character she was actually playing, for instance, and how that character fit into the show’s plans as they stood in May 2025.

However, that doesn’t mean she’ll be spilling the beans now. All we’re getting from Piper is speculation, as the Radio Times reports from the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi Convention in London. (A fan filmed it and posted it on X as well, which you can see below.)

“I am not the next Doctor, I am Rose Tyler in hiatus,” she explained. Then, with the nervousness of someone who is well-aware that Doctor Who fans will seize on her every word, she added, “Sorry, that’s a really cryptic answer, but because I’m not currently filming Doctor Who as the Doctor, I can’t lie and say otherwise.”

“I think you’ve all got to be very patient,” Piper said. “It will be worth it when it comes. And I think that we need to celebrate the fact that the show has been … around for a very long time, it’s been massively successful, and it’s impacted so many people’s lives positively.”

“And it’s had a bit of a rough time lately, and I think everyone just needs to chill out and wait for what comes from having the space… and time.”
