Aladdin is flying on his magic carpet finds that the speed with which his carpet moves varies directly as the carpet's altitude and inversely as the amount of gold on it. At a certain altitude and with a certain amount of gold on the carpet, the speed is 50 m/s. What will be the speed of the carpet, if Aladdin halves the altitude and doubles the weight of the gold on the carpet?
A. 25 m/s
B. 12.5 m/s
C. 20 m/s
D. 50 m/s
E. 37.5 m/s
The speed of the carpet is:
(1) Directly proportional to the carpet's altitude.
(2) Inversely proportional to the amount of gold on it.
Halving the altitude will cut the speed in half, so halving the altitude will make the speed 25 m/s.
Doubling the weight will also cut the speed in half, half the speed one more time to get 12.5 m/s.
Ans: B
