The Wellcome Library has released over 100,000 historical medical, science, and art images, and they are gorgeous, strange, and a little macabre.
Here are some of our favorites, which include an early 19th-century artist's conception of the teeming life within the Thames river (top) and (in order) a flip-panel anatomical illustration book, a sketch of an imagined biomechanical hand from 1564, a scrap of papyrus holding what is thought to be the earliest recipe for a herbal medication, a stop-motion study from photographer Eadweard Muybridge, a scroll identifying some common plants and animals used in Tibetan medicine, an "exploded thorax" illustration from a medical textbook from 1823, and an oddly-threatening illustration of wounds and how to treat them.
