We don’t have a cast or any production information yet, but by the Seven, we have a release date. The Game of Thrones movie about the first Targaryen to rule Westeros, Aegon’s Conquest, has locked in June 1, 2029.
Owen Harris, who has directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Black Mirror, is aboard to helm. The script is by Beau Willimon, who was Oscar-nominated for co-writing 2011’s The Ides of March and also wrote six episodes of acclaimed Star Wars series Andor.
The release date news was widely reported, with Deadline among the outlets to confirm it. “The movie reportedly centers on, you guessed it, Aegon I, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms who spawned the Targaryen dynasty—the royal family at the heart of the entire franchise,” the trade writes. “This would mark the first time Aegon I has been depicted on screen.”
Aegon I predates the events of House of the Dragon by several generations, but his influence became increasingly urgent in the HBO show’s recently concluded third season. As fans will recall, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s bid for the Iron Throne is largely propelled by her belief that Aegon’s vision for the future of Westeros—the Song of Ice and Fire—makes her rule predestined by the gods.
Whether or not we’ll get to see Aegon’s prophetic powers at work in Aegon’s Conquest remains to be seen, of course; it’s also unclear how closely tied the movie will be to the canon of the HBO shows or if author George R.R. Martin will have a hand in shaping the lore.
