Motorola A630 User Review by Das.
The mtrla A630 mgt b the phne uv bn wtng 4.
If you’re really into text messaging then you know what a pain that tiny cell phone is to “type” on. If sore fingers and stupid abbreviations are what your life has become, then check it-the Motorola A630 is about to hit the streets: Sporting a clamshell design la the old Nokia Communicator series, the A630 almost has it all.
Sadly, many of the rumors about this phone were off the mark. The three biggest let-downs are that it does not run Windows Smartphone, it doesn’t have a Secure Digital (SD) media slot and it doesn’t have an HTML browser. Aside from that, however, the rest of the spec gossip was pretty much right on the money.
The phone is running the standard Motorola “PTK” OS. It’s a tri band GSM phone so it should treat you right on any GSM network. Internally,it’s very similar to the Motorola V series phones. It has a few tweaks here and there to account for the different hardware revision and full keyboard. And, like the V series, the phone has Bluetooth for connections to wireless syncing contacts and using the latest headsets. It also sports a zoomless VGA camera, it can download MP3 ring tones, and the WAP browser works for basic Web stuff in a pinch. Finally, the A630 has AOL Instant Messenger-which we have to admit is pretty cute
While it doesn’t claim to be a PDA the A630 has some of the features you might expect from one. The pretty basic e-mail client is only workable, but since the phone has a full keyboard, it’s actually fairly useful. Although the 5 megs of memory on the device is limited, it can store enough email to get by. And checking and replying to e-mail from the comfort of your barstool (or park bench, for those who don’t drink during the day) is a snap.
“Working” from your phone is nice-but it’s old news. The real reason that anyone would want the A630 is for text messaging. Too drunk to figure out the predictive text input on your current phone? Well with the A630, if you’re sober enough to remember QWERTY then you should be OK.
What Motorola is really trying to do with the A630 is bring messaging to the masses. Not only e-mail, but text and instant messaging too, and with a keyboard on your phone, it really is doable. The A630 is Motorola’s first attempt and on the size and looks front it’s a clear winner. But there’s still no corporate messaging software for the little A630, so if you’re a suit during the day you may have to stick with that old Blackberry-for now.
The phone is coming to Cingluar “Real Soon Now” and should retail for about $250~$300.
