Remember that time your skin got all gnarly and you went to the doctor and she told you you’d been bitten by a brown recluse? Chances are youactually had a case of MRSA. Which… oh good, hooray?

As this webcomic from BuzzHootRoar* (a fantastic new science blog) explains, brown recluses are routinely slandered for nasty-ass wounds THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH. The real culprit? The notoriously difficult-to-treat Community-acquiredMethicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus, aka MRSA. Let’s face it – that’s way scarier than a brown recluse.

*What’s BuzzHootRoar, you ask? The gist is simple: Buzz (@VerdantRobin), Hoot (@NeilMccoy and @SarahBlackmon), and Roar (@VerdantEleanor) write up a pithy scientific explanation (300 words or less) and a graphic artist (like Beatrice the Biologist, who illustrated the comic up top) illustrates it! It’s only been up and running for a few days, but we’re expecting big things – go check out more bite-sized science explanations there!
