You’re in a military helicopter and flying through enemy territory. Someone’s shooting at you, but you can’t retaliate or escape because you don’t know where the shots are coming from. Bet you wish you had HALTT, a gunshot location system.

By using a series of acoustic sensors to detect the “distinct acoustic signature” of a gunshot, the Helicopter Alert and Threat Termination system is able to pinpoint the position of the shooter. In the field, this would keep troops better protected against small arms fire.

A prototype of HALTT is currently being tested and there are already plans to integrate the system in several helicopters deployed in Afghanistan. [Wired]
