In To Scale: The Solar System, the filmmakers seek to make a model of the solar system that gets the orbits and the size of the planets perfectly to scale. With Earth the size of a marble, they need seven miles of land.
Near the end of the video, one of the creators, Wylie Overstreet, says:
That’s what I really wanted to try and capture. We are on a marble floating in the middle of nothing. When you come face to face with that, it’s staggering.
What the project really gets at is just how important scale is. In order to make a diagram of our solar system easy to read, one with to-scale orbits has inflated planet size. Only with a model like the one Overstreet and Alex Gorosh created can you see just how massive the distances are.
