How Many Smuggled iPhones Can You Hide In a Beer Bottle?

iPhones are a hot commodity for smugglers. We already know that an old lady can stuff 44 iPhones in her stockings. But thanks to the most recent bust in China, we now know how many will fit in a beer bottle.

The inquisitive customs officials at the Sha Tau Kok border between Hong Kong and Shenzen discovered that professional smugglers can fit three iPhones inside a large-sized beer bootle. That's a lot of iPhones!

Guangzhou Daily reports that an "old woman" trying cross the border with a bunch of old bottles was stopped by suspicious officials. As you can see in the video above, the bottles were professionally sliced in half and filled with a neatly wrapped stack of phones. The total take: 216 iPhones.

So let's see, 216 phones divided by three phones to a bottle, means the old lady was trying to cross the border with 72 old bottles. Brilliant smuggling there. It doesn't matter how smooth you are, trying to cross the border with that many old recyclables is bound to attract suspicion. [Guangzhou Daily via Mic Gadget]

I don't understand why people are smuggling these phones... If they are for sale in China, wouldn't be cheaper to buy them legally, rather than on the black market? And if they are in short supply, where do the smugglers get them from? Are they stolen? If so, where are they stolen from?
